What would it take for Spurs to Challenge

Morning Guys

Obviously another great 3 points at the weekend & delighted to be sitting top after 8 games !!!!

Delighted with Ange, the players & the style of football.

If you read the press, nobody seems to think Spurs are capable of challenging for the title.... understandable given the size of the squad, players lost to injuries etc..... BUT....

If Spurs are still around the top come Christmas (not beyond the realm of possibility) and Daniel Levy decides to really go for it (Obviously CL football for next season is essential) and makes a few key signings. could Spurs actually make a run at the title? and if we come up short, still achieve our short term aim of Top 4 ?

Let's say Spurs could get Ivan Toney, Tapsoba and possibly Jotta (from his Saudi nightmare) .... would that be enough to challenge City, Arsenal & Liverpool ? Add Bentancur back to the first 11, no European football and a team full of confidence and it could be a fantastic season.

If Richie continues with his struggles (I'm still not sure he's an Ange type player) and we could recoup some money...I really think Spurs could be right up there when all said & done.

What say you ?

I also think that Arsenal have a superior first team to Spurs as for me your defence aint the best and tactically you are too gung-ho to win week in week out as the better sides will punish you

So far we have played Liverpool, Utd and Arsenal and none of these have 'punished' us.

My main concern is that we have been lucky in a few games so far this season and luck doesn't last. Also, Richarlison is just not up to it. I am never confident he will score and his performances so far have reinforced that.

We have Bentancur, Gil, GLC and Brennan to return and I think Ange should be able to get one of the forwards in that list to contribute more than Richie. We also haven't seen what Veliz can do.

Given all the above, I am still happy .... we are playing well, defending OK and creating plenty of chances - whatever happens it is better than watching Conteball.

Spurs are much better than i thought they would be. However, your squad is not strong enough and, as it is inevitable that you will get injuries, in my view you won't challenge for the title THIS season.

Having said all that, invest in the Summer (Jan window won't allow for a bedding in period) then who knows.

Think you will end up 4th with the top 6 as follows;

Man C
Arsenal
Liverpool
Spurs
Newcastle
Chelsea/ManU/Villa/Brighton
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately neither will Arsenal till they find a striker
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Er? we challenged last year without one

----------------------------------------------------------------------

With only one game a week, Spurs won't need anywhere a deep squad as if they were in Europe, and chasing domestic trophies. When everyone is fit they have 16/17 players currently easily able to manage one game a week.

Another striker and CB would not go amiss in Hanuary if available. If Arsenal can mount a challenge last season without a decent striker, then absolute no reason Spurs cannot this season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

We've had 2 players get serious knee injuries in training.

If that happens to Maddison, then 1 game a week counts for shiiit.

I also think you could challenge as long as your first team and key players remain fit. Ours fell apart after Saliba got injured as we had no one who could adequately take his place.

I also think that Arsenal have a superior first team to Spurs as for me your defence aint the best and tactically you are too gung-ho to win week in week out as the better sides will punish you

Btw re Saliba, not saying we'd have won it with him as City are a machine but think we'd have run them closer than we did.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Funny thing to say, as we have been winning week in week out. And the "better teams" havent punished us, and our "gung-ho" style saw us keep Arsenal at bay, more shots, more possession more shots on target.....and was it a deflection and penalty that got you your goals. Was that a 3rd deflected goals in big games for Arsenal yesterday?

I am not making the case we can challenge, just don't accept your broad judgements which are not backed up by reality. But i haven't been that impressed with Arsenal so far. You looked more dangerous last season IMO. Others are catching Arsenal up.

Fair play, can't argue with this. All 3 games could have gone either way but you came out of them well.

As you say, at least you look like you've got an actual decent style of playing and identity now. Anyway enough of this complimenting Spurs as i suddenly feel sick.

The problem with the Jan window is being able to extract anyone from squads still in European competition and particularly CL squads.

Maybe those who are on the edge or alienated from squads but is that really the place to be shopping for quality?

Any targets in Jan will have to be carefully considered and may have to be on the less known/experienced/young side and in keeping with how we have been buying recently.

So in terms of challenging we may have to wait for the summer and Ange's second season when hopefully we are back in the CL.

More than happy with this approach. As long as the data is good and the player passes the eye test, no issues.

Neither were first team regulars, and of course injuries will occur from time to time, but with Bentancur set to return, same with Johnson, Spurs will be fine. They don`t need 25 players available to play one game a week.
