Aston Villa - Genuine Contenders?

After the debacle of Steven Gerrard, I never thought they could be in this position so soon

Finishing above Arsenal should be the goal. I'd love Emry to do that after he was wrongly sacked by them.

Easily the 3rd best manager in the league.

I lived in Solihull for about 7 years aged 5-12. Villa were the local big team all my friends supported, so do like to see them doing well.

It's easy to say he was wrongly sacked with hindsight, but we looked awful and weren't picking up points. I think both parties learned from it and came back stronger.

Same can be said for Artera in the early days.

I agree, I thought he should have gone at that point tbh. That's why I say the club also learnt from it and became stronger as a result.

Doing really well, just shows what a difference getting a proper manager/coach can do rather than some ex player with an over inflated ego who’s been fast tracked into a big job

Great home side but only won 3 of 8 away games and Liverpool and an injury ravaged Spurs are the only tough away games they have played this season. They remind me of last seasons Newcastle side, they will finish top 4 and are very good, but no chance of the title, they are not winning at the Emirates, Etihad even Old toilet

Credit must go to Gerrard for building those foundations. Like Di Matteo all those years ago coming in and stealing the glory off Villas-Boas.

If Villa are contenders then so are Tottenham. Not trying to knock Villa in saying that by the way, they are conceivably in a challenge for the title, but I don't think they'll win it. I still think Spurs will probably finish above them if anything. Favourites are City, and then Liverpool.

I think the title might be a long shot but we are currently in the race, whereas Spurs, Newcastle and Man Utd aren't. That might change over the coming weeks/months, but with Unai in charge I don't see us slipping too much and think we're favourites now for top 4 which would be a great season especially if we can win the Europa Conference too. If we can target 15 wins at home and 8 wins away, we should be well over 70 points with a few draws and that should be enough for 4th. Absolutely no reason we can't do that.

I tend to agree we need to do better away from home but Newcastle was a tough away game too plus we have beaten Chelsea (who are sh*te admittedly) and Wolves are no mugs at home given they have beaten City and Spurs there.

We are contenders like you were a few weeks ago, if we go on a bad run we will then no longer be contenders but until that happens we are.

Given how bad the last few years were up to now I'd happily take 4th place, I think you're our biggest challengers, but do think we can come out on top given we are already a few points clear and have to play you at home. Long way to go though.
