I am no philosopher, but I would advise all those with parents to ask them questions about their life.
The best one I asked was along the lines of "what was your life like before you met my <insert opposite parent I was talking to>?"
Finding films, music, places they went to, on the internet, thus springing memories, you're in for a fascinating conversation.
