Oxford United 2 - 3 Derby County

OXFORD UNITED v DERBY COUNTY League 1 #23

Friday 1945 29th Dec 2023, The Kassam Stadium

A pleasing away day tenacious win at Wigan which we made far more difficult than it really was - the result was never in doubt once the ref had blown the final whistle - is followed by a FRIDAY game at a varsity city Oxford - relax these varsity universities are not a patch on the red brick ones.

Another away sell out for the Rams on the road - it is pretty incredible to see in Division 3 - but hey, we're here on merit and money, so no moaning.

A win could catapult us to 2nd - a loss could take us a nice 8th - all depending on other results. So don't get your hopes up.

Oxford are on the back of massive morale boosting varsity city derby victory against......er.....some other team and sit level on points with us. It will not be an easy game and I don't know which way to call it.

On a more personal not - you don't have to read this - but I'm getting a little bit perturbed with JA606. After non-combatative comments on the Florest/Newcastle MT, I get blocked - i.e. unable to comment anymore but they (I'm not going to insult them because I do not personally know them) are allowed to keep making barbs about l'il ole me - not the first time either. Admin 1 (and yes, we've established that you are a Florest fan and I respect that) - is this fair? (you have my email address)

Team news:- Wildsmith (GK), Wilson, Forsyth, Hourihane (C), Cashin, Barkhuizen, Bird, Collins, Mendez-Laing, Nyambe, Nelson

Subs: Vickers (GK), Bradley, Thompson, John-Jules, Sibley, Elder, Ward.

Agree with Vidal. Cashing might go, but cone back on loan. He's not ready for Premier yet but I think he'll want to finish this season with us at least.
The rest might interest lower half championship teams but why would you swap a promotion campaign with us for a relegation fight with Brum or Huddersfield?

Agreed. Its obvious from the scenes during & after the game that there's a terrific spirit developing amongst the management & players, and even the fringe players like Elder look like theyve bought into it.
As already pointed out, why miss out on that kind of atmosphere, full grounds and possible promotion at this stage of the season to sit on someones bench ?
A possible fly in the ointment might be the loss of Nyambe during January. I thought he was excellent last night, particularly in the first half

Fortunately Namibia are unlikely to progress far I imagine …

Money talks, if player wants to leave for big bucks to either championship, or even even Premier League team he will go, we could hang to him to get an agreed tribunal settlement based on the length of time he has been in the Academy.

This has always been the case, but little tends to happen in January. If there are big bucks on offer now, they will also be on offer in the summer, or even bigger bucks if the player continues to do well and more clubs become interested.

15 to 1 offered when Derby were 2-0.
Nice little return.

Fantastic result last night! The fact our Academy players scored the goals made it even sweeter. A massive congratulations to Thomo , returning from injury and making that sort of impact. Hopefully there's several more of those type of performances from our subs over the coure of the season.

Why would anyone want to leave a promotion campaign and the current vibe in the dressing room for anything other than another promotion campaign in the Championship? Cashin is our prized asset and if we can extend his contract (as suggested)and hold on to him then that's ideal. Bird and Sibley are the other two most likely departures in Jan with their contracts running out so time will tell.

Players gave absolutely everything yesterday. Hopefully we have enough in the tank on Monday against Posh.
