Ole promised to give young academy players a chance to play for the first team. He did not develop a sing young player, as far as I can remember. ETH, who started by signing expensive players, is quietly developing a very promising generation of young academy players. That’s why he deserves to be given time.

Bit unfair on Ole, talent in the youth team needs to be there to develop. Ole had that in Greenwood, and had he not become a raaapist then we probably wouldn’t be seeing much of Garnacho right now under ETH.

I admit I forgot Greenwood. What I mean actually is that ETH’s belief in youth in stronger than that of any previous manager since Sir Alex. When I look at the way the team is shaping up I like what I see. With Dalot (people forget that he is still young), Martinez, Mainoo, Garnacho, Amad, Hojlund, the future looks promising.

Dalot is 24 and Martinez is 26??!! I don't consider that young. It's got to be a blend of young players and experience. He's simply picking the best players available, regardless of age.
Mainoo has only be starting regularly recently, he wasn't at the start of the season, it was due to injury that he got his chance, rather than some great ETH foresight.
I have always said that there is a decent squad here, but ETH hasn't got the best out of them. And don't forget he forked out for Antony who was 21/22 at the time, how wise was that?

They aren’t youth players and some of those aren’t even young. LVG played more youth than anyone but few made it. It’s been much a muchness in terms of giving young players games since Fergie retired. Issue is that so many have failed to develop.

LVG played youth mainly out of necessity.

He quickly got rid of Garner and never gave Iqbal a go. He gave Pellistri limited opportunities too.
……
None of these were good enough. We can’t keep on holding onto squad players hoping they will make the step up.
That is one of the reasons why we can’t get the right side of FFP.
With January’s offloading it does now appear we are heading in the right direction at last. Summer will see a massive clear out as well.

It's not that ETH gives them a chance, all managers do. But if he spots the attributes he wants, he handles their introduction into the team very well.
Another thing he does well imo is giving injured players the time to get properly fit. A lot of managers don't, including Ole.
We are going to miss Lisandro though, we haven't got a like for like.
Nice to see Rashy with the odd smile and better body language.

I totally agree VC. Just making the point that ETH doesn’t give youth opportunities any more than any of our other managers.

Its anrubhish clear out if we end up buying rubbish. We should be signing borderline world class players not patchy players. We can same the patchy players for the youth team. Why are we signing Amrabat to a position we have lost 3 players who can do adequately. Or Antony, or Mount? I dont think the youngster should be borderline world class before they get regular playing time. City and Liverpool do this very well and through out a season are giving 3 to 4 youngsters genuine time playing. They sell them for piles and use them to get borderline world class players. We just give another mid level team strength to challenge us. We have the most amount of youngsters in the prem in my imagination. All for pennies. That's just wasteful

Is it though?

Garnacho and Mainoo were always going to make it and the others you’ve mentioned were either signed by him or first teamers already except Amad who he hasn’t given a go at all really.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's what training is for though. Over the course of many months, players like Iqbal get to repeatedly train etc.
If he's not pulling up trees in training then why would/should he get minutes?
If an academy player is genuinely balling in training, you can be absolutely sure they'll get a chance. If they aren't getting a chance then it's probably because they're not as good as you think they are.
But that's also why we're sat on our backsides making comments on a forum and not coaching within a Premier Legue team.

Whether ETH deserves time should be based on how we finish the season. A couple of wins is of course welcome, and hopefully a sign of things to come, but I'm still not convinced by him, but I'll happily be proved wrong for the rest of the season.
Our performances against the better teams have been shocking, so let's see what we do at Villa next week.
Any manager should be trying to use the own club's developed players, but that's just one aspect. No point of that if you finish half way down the table. You need all aspects of the team running well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Our last two wins were against two in form, well organized teams. Which is promising. My only worry is Martinez’ injury. We are simply not the same team without him, Casemiro and Mainoo. Their influence on the game as well as on their teammates is massive.

Agree with this
