Ange on 'Tactics'

Ange Postecoglou on Eric Dier’s ‘no tactical training’ claim:

"It’s probably something you’d have to ask Eric, I don’t know what you mean by tactical work, everything we do is geared on how we are going to play our football. So for me by extension is tactical work. Whether that’s on us, or whether it’s on the opposition.

In fact I would probably say we don’t do anything apart from tactical work. That’s all we do every day. If we’re working on our fitness, we’re still trying to play our football, but I haven’t seen the interview so I’m not sure what he’s referencing.

If you’re talking about do we do training where we’re standing around and working on how we’re going to stop an opposition, how we’re going to break down, no we don’t do that, but I don’t think that’s the only kind of tactical work that exists.

I think anyone who trains with us will tell you that all we do is train the way we play. Maybe that’s not tactical work, I don’t know."
--------------
From Dier's POV he was talking about defensive work.

I'm concerned.

Jose and Conte - Defensive

Ange (and Bielsa) - All out attack.

We will eventually need to find the middle ground somewhere. If Ange can find it, then great.

But if you look how tight the games were over the weekend, our own for 20 mins before we callasped, Pool v Palace and Woolwich V Villa, we need to better defensively. Especially against the teams who are set to counter us.

Maybe we have adopt Pep's tactic of making 50 passes before we have a shot to tire the oppo out, in the hope we can then pick them off?

Is he saying he doesn't do any tactical work on the opposition? If that's what he is saying then I find that worrying. I might be reading it wrong?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He is not saying that. He said they don't set up to stop the other team from playing.

This is very silly stuff. we clearly have tactics. every team does
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Obviously we do but to hear we don't do any defensive work is abit of flag. Especially at this level.

As I said on here the other day, in the second season he has been known to tinker with both fullbacks so lets wait and see 👍🏻.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I just think that's clearly and obviously not true. we have a very clear (and yes obviously imperfect before someone gets at me) pressing structure,
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not disputing that as I have already said. Maybe he just believes laying the foundation in year one should be a constant message. Deviating from pressing might muddy the waters some what 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Spurs' only problem is not setting up the defence correctly, attacking too much, conceding too many goals, not scoring enough to compensate, not having a winning attitude, poor quality players, a naive manager, fickle fans, a stupid American football stadium, strip is too boring, a lack of modern history, a stupid name, but other than that they are on the right path to success.

That is certainly a commom approach.

Look how defensive and boring Arsenal were, Arteta out was the cry from the locals12 - 15 months into his time. But that has set the basis for their league's best defensive record..

Poch had us running super hard, pressing like mad and drilled that into the squad in year one, before year 2 became more about building off that press and hard work and fitness. Klopp similar.

Ange sees attack as the best form of defence. Now whether you agree with that is one thing, the worry for me is that we are barely out-attacking most teams. The better chances always seem to fall at the hands of the opposition. You can only hope this will improve in time with better players I guess because it doesn't look like tactics will change much.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you know how silly this sounds when you do not have the football?
Tactics are about change.
When you have the ball you can attack......how do you do that(tactic1)
When you lose the ball what do you do?(tactic2)
When its minute 80 and you're up 0-1, what do you do (tactic3)

What does Newcastle do against AussieGlue....
park the bus (and what do we do against that?(tactic4))
and when NUFC gets the balls, what do they do? Hoooff it downfield and run like hell (tactic5)....
and what does VDV do....fall over (twice) (tactic6)

Yes Eric Dier is right.....Aussiegllue is a one tactic pony!!
