I love how this thread started off being filled with horror that Southgate was even being mentioned to now most people coming round to the idea and starting to feel positive about his upcoming appointment.

I'm not positive about it at all. I have no doubt he'd set the team up better than the current plank does but that's nowhere near enough of a reason.
Don't think he will be the one anyway.

I'm not positive about it at all. I’m ecstatic. Southgate is all I ever dreamed about as a Utd supporting school boy. The character of the guy is fantastic, and his foresight, I mean deliberately relegating biro as he knew they’d fall foul of ffp, and would free fall down the leagues, he saved them. Missing that penalty for England as he Kew the nation wasn’t ready, and was too ungrateful. Then having the levity to take the piiiisss out of it with Pizza Hut. Takes real balls. And I like balls
He is THE one.

Fair play to se85, amazing how this article has turned him around

The only way Southgate works as an appointment, in my view, is if he delegates the technical coaching and tactical detail to specialists, and (a bit like Fergie but without the wide-ranging power over recruitment, etc) is more of a leader of the coaching department, focusing on man-management, culture, and ensuring everyone is pushing themselves to the limit. I'm not aware of any big club that has that model but in principle there's nothing wrong with having a division of labour between the tactical wonks and the figurehead/communicator.

Perhaps. That is an unusual model, would it be better than let the press butthurt antagonistic Dutch Groundhog Day merchant purchase his crappy mates model?

And Southgate before England did not do well in club management.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
we know.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He would surely have the worst club record of any manager we've ever appointed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wilf McG didnt have a club managemnet record before he became Man United manager

Oh, you did your research.
Still, no record is probably better than a relegation.
