Timo Werner - Sign him or not?

Based on what we have seen from Timo, would you sign him for £15m + £165k wages a week. I read he dropped his wages from £250k at Chelsea to move back to Rb Leipzig.

In 13 games he has had 2 goals and 3 assists. Not bad or great.

He has now been ruled out for the season so what's the verdict?

I think he has done well but at 28 he is too old and not clinical enough, no matter how cheap the fee is. If he were 23 or 24 it might be a different story.

What say you?

We cannot just go our and buy Eze and Toney so complete out attacking line up, oh and also go big on another CM for 40m , and while we are at it another 25m of a back up left back

Why not?

Cost? Of course you could get a fair few quid in the cofers if you sell a few players amd I think as a club yiu are able to spend a large amount comparable to some other teams but those mentioned would probs cost a whack wouldn't they?

I'm not an accountant, but AFAIK the Kane money is going to show up in this year's accounts and we had FFP room anyway. Spending 150m net should be doable

To the original point, though, I think we've shown that we can get decent players for not huge sums (Udogie, Vicario, Sarr) so a backup LB shouldn't have to cost 25m nor should we be paying a rotation winger 160k a week or whatever Werner is on

Well we may be able to, but its unlikely we will have the probable £180-200m that will take. We've just come off the back of a season with no europe money and look unlikely to make the UCL. BUT some of the Kane money may well be still there to spend so who knows.

My point is that if we kept Werner because he can do a job as a backup to allow us to go bigger in other areas, that is not a lack of ambition. Its cutting our cloth accordingly.

We have seen some pretty decisive moves in the market in the last season or so, so i am hopeful we have a great idea of who we want and will not hang around until September to get deals done. There seems to be a much bigger, more specialised team work on this than what we have seen in the past, which has been mainly Levy

I just don't think Werner is that great of a deal tbh. Buying something cos it's cheap but isn't what you need is a false economy. There's loads of wingers out there that could provide similar and have a bigger upside. I'm not a scout but for backups with potential to be first team we could look at the likes of Rowe, Philogene, or Sommerville putting up good numbers in the Championship.

There's two ways of looking at it. We can spend big as we have the capacity to but it comes with enormous risk. You either spend big and become Arsenal or spend big and become Chelsea, Forest or Everton. Arsenal have gambled in a big way in the last few years and it's paid off because they've crucially built a squad to challenge but more importantly, from a financial perspective, are cruising CL football every year.

We tend to operate far more conservatively than that which is a little frustrating as the money is there to build but Levy just will not operate without the handbrake on. If Arsenal hadn't gambled, they would definitely be scrambling with us, United and Newcastle for the last CL place. At some point we do have to take a bit of a chance otherwise conservative spending will always mean a conservative finish.

I think it's less about how much you spend, more about being smart with it. We spent tons on Ndombele, Lo Celso, Sessegnon, Sanchez.. though our new 40m CB almost seems like a bargain.

Yes and No

Yes all day if used as a squad player and impact sub.

No way if used in first team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But this is the thing isn't it. He will be used in the first team. You'll get your first team player out for a period for whatever reason and then you'll start depending on the squad player. It's just like Davies the other day. We know he isn't anything other than a squad player, but then he ends up getting called upon in a big game and lets you down.

The idea should be to just get players who you feel are good enough being first team players, or at least bring in youngsters as your squad players, already at a decent level, with the feeling they're going to get even better and become first teamers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

You are ignoring the financial side of things.

We cannot just go our and buy Eze and Toney so complete out attacking line up, oh and also go big on another CM for 40m , and while we are at it another 25m of a back up left back.

It has little to do with ambition. Everto0n showed ambition and look at them. Forest showed ambition. It is down to what we can afford and who we can attract.

Folks sitting there demanding "we show ambition" is just meaningless, thoughtless BS.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really because ambition has been often what the football club has lacked under Levy. Why do you think we've held on to certain players who haven't been good enough for so long?

Yes finances play a part but don't pretend we haven't been in positions to do more and get rid of players we couldn't have got rid of long ago when it was clear they were no better than squad player material.

It’s a no from me…he’s a poor finisher.

We should be looking at bringing in the likes of Eze &
Gimenez in the summer!

Giminez isn't a great finisher either
