You get to be Southgate tomorrow evening...

What team are you picking?

I think we've looked far too flat and lacking intensity both on and off the ball, so personally I'd be very tempted to introduce two or three players who can maybe offer a bit more graft, running and aggression to better facilitate the match winners in the team. Trying to shoehorn in the most talented players rarely works; too many cooks and all that...

I'd be going with:

----------------Pickford
Walker-Stones-Guehi-Trippier*
-----------------Rice
-----Gallagher---Bellingham
Palmer--------Kane------Gordon

*Shaw if fit enough to start as he's going to need minutes at some point and tomorrow seems the only really appropriate chance to assess him on the pitch before the knockouts.

Gordon & Gallagher offer more running and intensity than TAA & Foden (plus pace in Gordon's case) and Palmer puts in a shift too from what I've seen of him. What I like about Palmer is that he's a little more individualistic than some of the other wider options, and in international football where teams aren't playing together week in, week out, that could be an advantage; to me he's a player that more than anyone else has that ability to produce a 'moment' through a killer pass, piece of skill or goal.

That's what I would do... Over to you!

swapping gallagher for trent first game certainly gave us more control. Bowen also was impressive imo.

Yeah we showed them with our 53% possession

All this talk about Trent, Mainoo, Wharton etc but our big problem in my opinion is we basically have no left side.

Foden drifts into the middle which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn't work when Trippier is the full back who understandably isn't going to bomb down the line and whip a cross in on his weaker foot. Both our goals so far have come from Saka or Walker getting down the line and getting a cross or cutback in, something the left is missing.

Not taking another true left back given Shaw's fitness has been incredibly poor management from Southgate.

I sometimes wonder if, against teams who in theory should get limited chances against us, if we should play trent at lb. He's not a good defender anyway so being out of position wont be too different.

I would say it compounds a poor situation rather than being the main cause of our problems.

While our few good chances have come from the right, Foden also hasn't been particularly influential or on form and to me this is largely caused by him being out of position, and even when drifting in he will always have the thought that he needs to recover his left sided position. He needs to be free to roam a lot more IMO.

I am more of a fan of pace in these wider areas and if we had say Gordon playing there we'd be way more productive, we wouldnt be so bothered by how much support he gets from the FB, whether Shaw or Trips...but then Foden needs playing somewhere else or dropped.

I do not see how playing Gallagher is going to improve our attacking output, which so far we can measure good chances on 1 hand in 2 games.

Gallagher is quite creative, good on the turn, and presses high which leads to more chances. As mentioned, he was in the top 10 (or there abouts) in the league for the categories of most tackles, interceptions, passes and chances created for a midfielder. He is suited to the position atleast. Probably have a stinker now but southgate has managed this all wrong, whoever replaces trent now is under immense pressure to perform.

Mainoo could have scored the winner if Kane passed it back to Mainoo.
