I'm not a fan as such, but what we don't seem to have in the squad is a CM player that offers that proactive off the ball work and graft other than Gallagher, and pretty much all successful teams have a player like that who selflessly covers ground, closes people down and offers a bit of bite in midfield. On the basis that he's the closest to that in the squad, that's why I'd put him in there.
Pickford
Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier
Mainoo, Rice
Saka, Bellers, Eze
Watkins
Speed, skill and direct football.
Pickford
Trent Stones Guehi Gomez
Rice Bellingham
Saka Foden Gordon
Kane
attack attack attack
I think we need more control of the ball and if we're playing Kane we need more threat running in behind. So:
- Gordon for Foden (who can come on for Bellingham later on)
- Mainoo for Trent
Quite possibly Wharton is as good a shout for the second midfield spot, but honestly I haven't watched him much.
Radical alternative: pick three centre backs and give TAA a bit more licence to create.

I'd perhaps have Wharton sitting & mopping up and Ricey doing what he does slightly ahead of him.
He is key to keeping the pressure on the opposition by his positioning and pressing behind the front 5/attackers. He stops counters and he recovers the ball and recycles it for us to keep probing, usually in opposition final third. He did it a few times the other evening but for that to work we need to press better as a team and generally our pressing has been bad because we do not compress the space enough, defence too deep.
I think any decent CM can press effectively IF we push up as a team and press as a team, and so id rather have Mainoo or Wharton as they are better on the ball. Gallagher has run around a lot but the spaces for him to close were too great and he was pretty ineffectual. Even more so when he got booked. His use of the ball aint great.
Pickford
Trent Guehi Stones Gomez
Wharton Rice
Bowen Eze Gordon
Watkins
We are basically through and that team should give us enough to beat Slovenia, plus a chance to give some a rest and some others a chance to see what they can do.

I had considered Rice as one of the 8's and having Wharton or Mainoo come into midfield and sitting instead. Only slight issue is that I think both Rice and Bellingham operate more comfortably from the left of the three, meaning someone has to compromise. Gallagher is more at home on the right of the three so it looks more balanced, even if the overall quality of Rice, Bellingham + Mainoo or Wharton looks superior.

I just do not see what Gallagher offers, other than legs.
the whole "we've struggled to replace Kalvin Phillips" comment from Southgate says it all. Safe safe safe.
In a pair of boring tepid performances, for which Gallagher was on the pitch for about 90 minutes, for me it was the system that led to our performances and bringing on Gallagher did nothing to change that. If we congest that space to allow us to press better, he may do that ok but his use of the ball is a handbrake to opening up any well drilled deep defence.
Hell no with Gallagher.

Gallagher is a lot more than stats.
But he is 24th in the pl for big chances created.
23rd in pl for passes.(8th for midfielders)
13th for tackling
13th for interceptions (7th for midfielders).
Also chipped in with 5 goals and hid the woodwork a fair bit.
He's a very good player.

thats the point though for me is that we already have enough players like this but even better. Palmer cant even get in the team
need to get the balance right. actual wingers outwide, not playing RBs out of position etc
could create a whole XI with just no10s or box to box midfielders

Might be a very good player, but when it comes to defining his profile, none of that screams press-resistant, control of possession & tempo orientated midfielder. You've obviously watched him more than us non-Chelsea fans but I wouldn't say he has done much for match control in his last two England cameos either.
