He was literally seconds away from being seen as a national embarrassment. Possibly his managerial career in England being over in quite some time. Would have been worse than Hodgson in 2016. And then Bellingham goes and saves his behind. Kane also has a lot to thank Bellingham for. Of course it might still end that same way against Switzerland but still, I can't think of anyone more incompetent who has been riding their luck so much.
I don't want to hear about how he's reached a final or semi. The stars aligned for him with generous draws, the right set of players, everything going his way, the way things didn't for previous managers.
Can anyone honestly say if he had taken over during Hodgson's time it would have been any different? In 2012 we lost to Italy on pens in the QF. Well we did that in 2021 when we reached the final. In 2014 we finished bottom of the group with 2 big teams in it and Costa Rica. Well Southgate has proven he can't beat any big teams (teams who have won something before) in tournaments away from home, so probably would have been a similar outcome. In 2016 we lose to Iceland in the first KO round. Well yesterday was heading that same way, only we didn't have a Bellingham back then to save us.
He was lucky to get the job and he's lucky to still be in it and having his 4th crack after some of the most ponderous, laboured football for years, with a new Golden Generation of players.
