With the new season weeks away I've been thinking about our rivals for top four.
I think Arsenal and City are pretty nailed on (unless a title disappointment hangover and the 155 charges comes into play) so what about our traditional rivals Liverpool?
Well following a manager who masterminded a PL and CL in his nine years in charge will be tough but is Arne Slot the man to do it? I have my doubts and I could well see him having a Moyes at United kind of season because:
- his 'rolls royce' CB is past is best (Rio Ferdinand)
- his main attacking threat is also a year older and not as good as he once was. Will he be motivated under the new boss (RVP)
- some talented but so far untested collection of youngsters may be an issue (Smalling, Jones, Fabio, Rafael, De Gea)
- they could be about to find out their owners weren't that great and relied on the skills of their previous manager.
Are Liverpool fans worried? I think they have every right to be. As the reds of Manchester are making headway in the transfer market and critical staff Liverpool are seemingly standing still.
In a weird twist of fate Slot's third game is away at...Old Trafford. Where was Moyes' third game? Away at Anfield! Make of that what you will.
Slot = Moyes

Yeah it's a good time to look back on who won what in 2024. Man U won the FA Cup. Liverpool won the Carling cup under Klopp.
Slot won nothing

If anyone was going to come on with a really dull, cliched post, it had to be you.

Well obviously

I’d say it’s still a wum, Term.
So dredging this up on NYE makes you look a bit silly, to say the least.
Amazing how you’ve been so badly affected by this.

Tbf it's looking more like Slot = Paisley. Straight after Klopp looking like Shankly.
We look like United after Busby with that wait for another Fergie.
And the funny thing is that era which begain in the 70's was not too dissimilar to what's happening now to both clubs.
Ffs!

Yeah good chance they’ll finish seventh as well.

The most bitter out of all United fans will be in bits right now.
Delicious.

You could be right, but still only halfway through and loads of time for things to go wrong.
Wumming aside, I think nearly every Liverpool fan is in shock at how well things have gone, no one could have predicted this. He’s gotten to the halfway point having lost one game in all competitions, not many managers have done that at any stage of their club careers.

There's no doubt he's doing very well. I think credit needs to be given to whoever did their homework at the club and recruited him. Genuinely never heard of the bloke before you appointed him. I don't blame any fan for thinking he'd flounder after Klopp, after all I was one of them!
The test will come when he needs to rebuild, but given you've got some good players coming through that may be a while. Possibly when it comes to replacing the likes of Salah or Van Dyke. Having said that, it'll probably be down to your DOF and others moreso?

I think at the moment it’s more evolution than revolution with our squad. There’s a decent balance between experience and younger players. If the rumours are true and Salah/VVD are going to sign two year deals then that will obviously help.
But yes, it’s always an unknown when it comes to a new manager buying players, but he’s already shown he’d rather buy no one if he can’t find the right player with our DM search in the summer.

I'm fairly sure both Salah and VVD will extend contracts. You've got a good crop of youth coming through or players that have come in over the past couple of years. It's definite evolution, not revolution needed. Reason I mentioned Salah and VVD is that even with the extra two years (which gives breathing space) the best managers know when to rebuild and it's often a ruthless approach. Age plays a factor regardless. If LFC are on the ball they won't be waiting for them to decline, but looking to address this in the next 12 months.
Not saying Pep is not a good manager but I think he's either rested on his laurels or been too loyal towards some of his players rather than being more ruthless even with some players considered to be pivotal to their success. And he's seeing the repurcussions this season imo.
