Slot = Moyes

Wasn't pretty much your entire first choice back line above the age of 30 and your only decent offensive players Rooney and an injury prone RVP?

6/7 of our first choice XI are still in their peak or approaching it.

Didn't Moyes win the English Super Cup in his first game?

He didn't build it up much though. Perhaps that's where he went wrong?

While the squad situation is surprisingly similar, the coach skills, personality and tactics are almost polar opposites and I believe you are severely underrating Slot as a coach.

I mean the guy worked his way up from the bottom barrel Dutch 2nd division clubs all the way up to silverware and deep european runs. All that with a very modern game approach, almost German like tactics with heavy stamina requirements like his predecessor at Liverpool combined with Dutch positional/off the ball emphasis.

But above all else, Slot is a typical Dutch wiseass with overflowing confidence and his own way. At least he won't be influenced by media/pundits/club icons and brings what's expected of him. He also inherited a squad much better fitted to his gameplan, while Utd should have gotten Lukaku or similar up top if they knew Moyes was going to play hoofball...

Moyes was on “The Rest is Football” podcast recently, it was a good listen regarding his time at Utd. It sounds like he realised fairly early on the timing was wrong and he’d made a few mistakes, but still feels the Utd job was something he had to take when offered.

In spite of his time at Utd, I still quite like Moyes. Not many like him in the game anymore.

I must admit I was made up for it when he won the Europa Conference with West Ham and his Dad joined him on the pitch to celebrate. He wasn't good enough for United (take heed LFC fans) but I do think he's a decent man.

Hard to know how he’ll do. Taking over from Klopp isn’t quite the same as taking over from Ferguson who probably had too much control for anyone to successfully take over. Liverpool seem pretty well run and I’m sure he isn’t expected to win anything in his first season or 2.

He also isn’t regarded as highly as Klopp was when he took over (who took over a mess of a team) but that doesn’t mean he can’t succeed. But what can any manager expect to succeed when City still have Pep? Klopp imo did an incredible job at Liverpool winning ‘only’ 1PL title (which was always understandably Liverpool's priority).

My main concern is that when Slot inevitably gets sacked, say November or something, they manage to get one of Alonso, Tuchel, Poch or Zidane.

We need to make sure we get one of them first.

I think we will be lucky though. Liverpool will go down the "We don't sack managers, we give them time" route like we did with Moyes instead of sacking him at the right time like Chelsea do.

I am kind of baffled by Liverpool's inactivity in the market. They shouldn't be constrained by the regulations given they've not spent massively.

They've yet to make signing, yet too even make noises they are seriously chasing anyone.

They need a decent sized refresh this summer.

Robertson is going downhill and Tsimikas isn't capable of being a starter if you want to win things.

VVD is still good but not imperious like he was a couple of years ago (he's in renew or sell time too),

They still need to replace Fabinho and the market for quality DM's is quickly drying up.

Big question on Salah, another they should really be selling this summer if the Saudi's come knocking with good money.

Diaz making noise that he wants out.

Absolutely must buy a centre forward and consign Nunez to the bench if selling him is too difficult.

Why the fook are they still standing around with their hands in their pockets. I think they should be starting to worry.

Yeah good chance they’ll finish seventh as well.

I quite like Moyes too. And the subsequent fate of United tells us that he wasn't the only or main reason for our post-Fergie downturn. Ability to get total buy-in from a squad is essential to success as a manager. It was always going to be very hard for him to do that in the shadow of Fergie, and he wasn't very good at projecting confidence - but I think things could have gone differently for him if the club had been more decisive in the transfer window (buying Alcantara/Kroos instead of Fellaini) and if results of more of those marginal early matches had fallen in our favour. As it was, the natural scepticism of players quickly gained a momentum that Moyes didn't have the power to counteract.

The issue I had with Moyes, well before we signed him was how negative he was in the big games for Everton, especially the games against the dips.

In recent years West Ham have mostly looked better once they were a goal down, which, for them, was often too late.

Klopp is all about the team, I don’t think he’d ever leave us in the mess that Fergie left Utd.
