I highly doubt Pep or Klopp would have won the league with SAF’s last team.

...............

Why not? It was not a run of the mill team. It only lost the title the year before on goal difference.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It wasn’t close to being a great team imo.

I don’t think United were a great team after 08/09. The fact that SAF won 2 more titles and missed marginally in the other of his remaining seasons said it all about his greatness.

This Liverpool team were really vulnerable at times last season, even with Klopp. You can talk about coaching and tactics all you like, but Klopp’s management is what will really be missed because he fostered a never say die attitude in this group.

I don’t know enough about Slot to say whether he’s got that same ability to manage, I’d be surprised it he does.

posted on 24/7/24

He’d be the first Dutch manager in history to create it I reckon!

I’ve read loads on Slots stats, pressing, counter pressing, etc, and it should fit this squad.

If anything though, I’d like us to be less attacking.

We will see how good this Liverpool squad truly is this season. I have my suspicions that Klopp was getting 15 to 20% more out of them than most other managers could do. If that theory is correct then they are going to drop off a fair bit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s a valid comment.

There is a LONG list of players, at both Dortmund and Liverpool, that as soon as they leave Klopp, they drop off a cliff.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think it makes any difference which club it is.....if you come in and immediately replace a manager that's adored and considered a legend you're on a hiding to nothing.

Salah and VVD aren't at their peaks anymore either. They are both still in good shape but probably over the very peak now and on their way down.

City are going to suffer massively after Pep too. How do you even replace him?

I think that side of things is over egged tbh. People always point to Ferguson, but no-one talks about Enrique winning the treble after Pep, or the successful manager after Jose at Chelsea, or Carlo cleaning up after Zidane. I could find more if I cba. Further back Dalglish followed Fagsn who followed Pailsley who followed shanks.

So I don’t subscribe to that at all, Utd were the anomaly, or rather Feegie was.

For me it’s just physical with some mental. Look at Mane, look at Mkhytaryan, Goetze… and I could go on there too.

Agree with this. There will always be fluctuations, and they are more likely to correlate with changes of personnel, but rigorous succession planning mitigates against the challenges of replacing a great manager. Another example is Brighton, who reached heights they'd never dreamt of under Potter, and improved under his successor. I also think there's a lot of wishful thinking about what City will be like after Guardiola leaves. They'll still be the best squad in the league, with the most successful sporting leadership operation over the last decade presiding over more or less the biggest budget, with the luxury of only needing to make tweaks to the squad to refresh it. They'll also have a very clear view of which manager has the right profile to maximise the resources they have.

This comes across as hope more than expectation from United fans.

We all said this though when you told it was all going to break down after Fergie. We all said we'd be just fine. A little drop off but we will be back to challenging within a year or two.

11 seasons on now and we haven't challenged once.

It depends on the club and how influential those managers are. The examples given by Robbing aren’t necessarily comparable situations to City and Pep, and some of them saw drop offs anyway in the short term.

You could say the same about Ferguson but he was still a great character, as is Klopp.

Which managers do you like out of interest?
