Thought we were slightly better than last season today but some of the flaws remain so letโs hope we improve as the season goes on. I donโt think we had any bad performances at all but reckon Maguire was the best on the pitch for me. Is he good enough to start every week? Probably not but imo we win that game because of the work he put in.
All in all a positive start to the season and letโs hope Zirkzee pushes on as a great start for him ๐ฅณ

First time in 2024 we’ve conceded 10 shots or less im a game. A huge factor why we were so poor last season.
Buying 3 defenders will hopefully make a huge difference being more solid.
I liked the look of Zirkzee.

A large part of that was how much better our counterpress is looking now.
We kept them pinned in their half for large parts of the game, particularly first half, and kept their midfield from exploiting space between the lines despite their numerical advantage in there. Credit to the front four in particular for that, but as a team it worked well.
The chances they did have, barring the corners, largely came from more direct, longer balls, which we largely hoovered up quickly. Bodes well, particularly for when we have a fitter and pacier back four ready to play.

I really didn't see a counter press. A bit in your own half but when you lose the ball you retreat back, rather than pressing. It was the same last season. Mainoo is the only player that isn't a defender I see actually putting a concerted effort into pressing and by that time it's usually too late to call it a counter press.

You weren’t paying attention first half then.
We forced them to go long from their defensive third 14 times before the break according to WhoScored, and turned the ball over high up the field repeatedly.
I haven’t seen the tackling stats, but again, six interceptions in their half in the first 45 mins.
The game changed after our subs. The intensity dropped (purposefully or otherwise), Zirkzee wasn’t as effective as Mount when they had the ball, and yeah, then we were dropping in.

Mount too. And Casimero. The only player who doesn’t press is Rashford.

Worrying over-reliance on attacking down the left side. Team need to put more faith in Amad/Garnacho, because Rashford isn’t it.

It's not a case of not having faith in Garnacho, he was just late back to pre-season. Agree Rashford has looked off it for a while and he probably should've come off rather than Amad

It's not greatly surprising that our attack was more down the left today with two senior players in Dalot and Rashford on that side versus a rookie (Amad) and a debutant (Mazraoui) down the other.
I expect we'll see things balance out a bit more soon enough and things (hopefully!) start to click into place.

Yep give it to the man.. Harry played his ass off…
And while Rashford wasn’t great, I actually felt he gave a damn, and wasn’t dropping his head, and should’ve had a nailed on assist.

The stats is 'forced them to go long' or simply they went long? They play long balls against better opposition, that's their game.

Yeah Mount done a bit of pressing but we're not talking about pressing, we're talking about counter pressing. It requires a group of players on the same wavelength engaged in coordinated pressing. I don't see it much from United, a little in your own half.

Good start to the season, Maguire wasn’t anything flash and it still worrying that we still struggle to play out from the back without losing the ball or making life hard for ourselves in some way!
