Sterling or Toney?

If we had to sign one of those two before the deadline who would you pick?

There’s rumours online that we may try to sign Toney but probably a load of rubbish.

Reputable journalists have said that there have been discussions around a Sterling/Sancho swap but it doesn’t sound like anything is advanced.

Toney is a good player. If we hadn’t signed Zirkzee and Toney was available for 30-40 million I’d be all for it but not now. We have 2 CF’s. We’re going to play 1 up top at most. We don’t need another. He’s a good striker but not this top player who guarantees 20+ a season that Robb and the likes portray him to be.

Sterling was one of the top attackers in Europe a few years back but he’s in gradual decline for a few years. He’d still command huge wages and wouldn’t improve us enough at this stage of his career to be worth it. He’s been playing since 16 years old and has plenty of miles on the clock. Not to mention he’s played for Liverpool & City.

I’m hopeful we sign neither but if I had to pick between the 2 it would be Toney.

It’s possible, but becoming increasingly rare. I don’t see it myself.

All the players that got 19+ league goals last season had between 2.5 - 3.0 as many shots on goal as Hojlund.

I don't expect that we will suddenly start creating him double or more chances, but I do expect some improvement. If he was playing at City then I have no doubt he'd manage 20+.

I’m just saying not many strikers score 20+ league goals in the Prem anymore, and the ones that do are generally bona-fire world class.

Salah
Kane
Suarez

But James Beattie managed once so who knows, there’s certainly similarities in their game.

If you’d rather have Hojlund over Toney then it shows how badly the standards have fallen at the club.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yet here you are touting for us to spend £40m on a 28 year old who only has 25 top flight goals from open play. Make it make sense.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. I just get this Toney love in whatsoever. Good PL striker but that's it. JSP's cousins comment that he would rather Toney to any signing we've made in the past 2 years is also quite bizarre.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeh I don't really get it myself. He is a good player as you say, but he has only really had one good year in the PL, in which he scored 14 from open play. He's no better than Lukaku.

Apologies I should caveat that they’re generally penalty takers too.

I do think it’s quite telling no-one has snapped up Toney, especially when strikers are at a Premium.

I went to school with a lad called James Featherstone who played with Beattie at Blackburn as a kid. He was his best man at his wedding. Didn't make it at top level football, but became an agent.

Ian Holloway speaks very highly of him:

Me too.

Spurs went for Solanke instead. That says a lot.

As a rival fan I’d rather you got Sterling. Toney would immediately improve United and guarantee goals.
It’d be a shrewd signing and a good bit of business at the amounts quoted. That’s why I can’t see it happening 😂
