Just getting this in nice and early, but I'd love to see us bring him home next summer. Super technical, quick, excellent football brain, energetic and has the ability to run a game in midfield.
Going and playing regular football in one of Europe's top leagues has done him the world of good and there aren't many players around with his skillset in central midfield.
For some context of his progress, Luka Modric had only just moved to Tottenham at the same age that Gomes is now and wasn't playing in a league as strong as Ligue 1. I'm not arguing Gomes is as good or will become as good as Modric - one of the best midfielders ever - but making the point that he's at the right age and with the right experience behind him to make a step up.
I said before the Euros that I was surprised Southgate hadn't looked at him in a few friendlies, but he certainly looks well placed to be a regular pick in future England squads.

Not the main thrust of the article, but the Modrić comparison tells us that it isn't always a bad thing to have time to develop in a so-called 'lesser league'. At the same age, Modrić was aj absolute idol in his country, collecting league titles and player of the year awards. He already had more than 30 full international caps to his name.

Thought he had a steady game but did he really have an impact? Thought he was a bit Gerry Daly Ray Wilkinsesque collecting the ball and playing backwards or sideways only occasionally fizzing one forward, but if he keeps working hard he definitely has a future in an England shirt

2006 born Mali midfielder considered huge talent for present and future.
