Regarding bringing him back though - I'd hope our recruitment team would make that decision completely objectively. If he hadn't come from our academy, would we even be mentioning it? I have no idea - but that's the question that needs to be asked.

Good skillset though. And on the face of it, Eriksen out and him in for free would be an upgrade - its just a question of whether there are better moves to be made.

If he is available for free next summer then he's certainly someone to look at. As bloodred says Eriksen out and Gomes in could be an upgrade.

If Gomes isn't cut out for the PL, we'd still probably get a decent fee from abroad providing we don't offer him silly money.

It is indeed.

But it's also proof that everyone involved in these ridiculous deals should be fired out of a cannon into the abyss.

Glazers and Woodward did most of the damage. Arnold and ETH have sadly only dug the hole even deeper for us with a disastrous transfer policy.

I love Gnomes, but I’m not sure it’d be a good decision for the player to come back. I just don’t see how he’d fit into the team regularly whilst we have Bruno. He’s potentially an upgrade in possession on Mainoo, however, he doesn’t address Mainoo’s massive weaknesses out off the ball defensively, as he’s probably worse.

He hasn't been playing in Bruno's position for Lille for the most part. He'd be an option alongside Ugarte (Mainoo shouldn't be playing every single game at his age). We also need to start thinking beyond Bruno.

It's near enough impossible to find a player who offers outstanding quality in position and equally as good quality out of possession. None of the best midfield conductors were ever particularly known for their defensive acumen or athleticism (Scholes, Pirlo, Xavi, Modric, Fabregas, Kroos etc), but they had the intelligence to know their position well enough to get by without the ball and played in well structured, quality teams which is ultimately the key to any team looking solid out of possession.

I don't think many people would have thought that Paul Scholes in his 30's and Michael Carrick (class, but not someone that is going to do his midfield partner's running for him) would be ideal on paper. But it worked (helped that the rest of the team was very strong too, of course!).

Sadly Gomes he'll be a waste with Bruno but I am of the opinion we should play 3 midfielders than 2 midfielders and Bruno with a striker dropping back.

Regardless, with him being on a free, it will be criminal not to sign him. Bruno has to leave and sooner than you think.

Moving on from Bruno is all well and good, but we’ve just given him a new contract so that doesn’t look like it’s in the club’s thinking.

Sadly you are right. We should still sign Gomes. He's the very definition of a good deal.

Have to wonder who's fault it is.

He might not necessarily be the answer to our midfield problems but it’s clear we need more than 1 CM next summer. So if he we can get him for free I think it’s definitely something we should consider. Makes sense having him over someone like Eriksen.

We’re most likely going to still need to bring in quite a few players next season and won’t have the money to splash out on all of them. Signings like Gomes for free could be a very sensible option.
