Stadium update

Tritax is negotiating a land deal to move Freightliner's Old Trafford rail terminal to St Helens, enabling Manchester United to expand its stadium redevelopment. The relocation would free up land for around 20,000 homes and ease rail bottlenecks between Manchester and Liverpool. The proposed new site at Parkside East, St Helens, is part of a larger regeneration plan, potentially creating 90,000 jobs and boosting the UK economy by £7.3bn annually. A new passenger station near Old Trafford is also part of the masterplan.

Additionally, Manchester United's Old Trafford redevelopment will not receive public funding, according to Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham. The club is deciding between a new £2bn, 100,000-seat stadium or renovating the existing one. He also urged government backing for connecting the new Parkside terminal to the West Coast Main Line to improve the region's rail system.

Freighliner Manchester employs 1800 people.

What's going to happen to them if they have to relocate operations to St Helens.

What's the distance between the two locations? If not too prohibitive, why not commute? I'd think redundancy would be an option, too.

Regeneration would create ample job opportunities as the article suggests.

Half an hour by car. Redundancy sucks unless you have 20 years in and you're nearly retired. The most you get is about £20k, that's not even a year on minimum wage. That's statutory by the way, hopefully there's a Union that can negotiate better terms.
