Best CB of the PL era?

Even an an Arsenal fan I would have to say prime VVD was levels above anyone else. He had it all. Pace, passing ability, strength, positioning etc. I saw some tweet by John Terry boasting about his CL and PL winners medals. But Terry lacked the pace and physicality of VVD. I hope Saliba can improve and become the player VVD was in his prime.

Terry had a stroke rate that would have him getting games up front for Utd

And Wayne Bridge knows all about that.

Great minds DJ

The stroke rate in which John Terry had would be well know to Wayne Bridge and his wife.

At the end of this season Van Dijk would be top 3 CB in the league for about 10 seasons, most of that being the best CB in the world as well.

I think the only time he wasn't the top CB in the league was when Spurs had the partnership of Aldeweireld and Vertonghen...back then we was with Southampton.

Even currently his performances are at pre-injury levels.

I genuinely don't get this longevity stuff

I know personal awards are a very limited indicator, but only 9 defenders have ever been voted into top 3 of the Ballon D'or:

• Giacinto Facchetti
• Franz Beckenbauer
• Bobby Moore
• Franco Baresi
• Andreas Brehme
• Paulo Maldini
• Matthias Sammer
• Roberto Carlos
• Fabio Cannavaro
• Virgil Van Dijk

There are some absolutely legendary defenders in that list. And Roberto Carlos.

Anyone who says VVD is using recency bias. He’s a world class CB and one of the best of the current generation in his peak but there are plenty of CBs that were much better defenders than him.

Plenty and much better?

Go on I’ll bite, name plenty “much better” defenders than VVD.

I think it's VVD but harsh from the OP on Terry. Didn't have the pace VVD does but physicality certainly wasn't an issue. Terry had everything also, great passing range too, not quiet on VVD's level but he had it. Won everything in both boxes, put his body on the line when needed which he has over VVD for me, although it's rare VVD finds himself in the position he needs to make those types of challenges.

Terry is certainly up there. As is Sol Campbell who for some reason gets underrated.
