Ukraine

I fully expect Zelensky to sue for peace and probably give up a shiiit ton of Ukrainian land to Russia. Will he even survive as President? He may need to stand down as part of an agreement for hostilities to stop. A sad end to a brave defence of sovereign land.

If the Republicans control the house and senate there’s zero chance more aid goes to Ukraine. And just like that Putin wins. Funny that πŸ™„

Why is everyone talking about other countries? Ukraine are a very specific case. They had an agreement to stay neutral and never try to become a NATO state.

Russia doesn’t care about expanding, have you seen their land mass? They care about defending themselves from the Western creep towards them and keeping America in particular off its borders.

Putin’s not going to jump from the misery of this war for minute areas of land, relatively speaking, to a big war with Poland / mainland Europe / NATO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course Russia wants to expand its influence and sphere, just like the USA, don't be ridiculous and naive.

It's not just Ukraine that had an agreement to stay neutral. NATO wasn't supposed to move east and Russia could attack a number of countries on that excuse.

Finally, in this respect, who cares if Putin can jump from one war to another. Doesn't matter if it's immediately or after 20 years. Russia would do it in their own time, just like they did with Ukraine. You're interpreting things with stoicism.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Can you show these other nations equivalent of Ukraine’s ‘Declaration of State Sovereignty’? Maybe I am naive.

IMO though Russia want the hassle of war less than most whereas the US invite & often incite it at every opportunity. I went to school in the US and travel back multiple times a year so I’d love to pretend they’re not the protagonists in most of these fights for global positioning.

All of them would rather achieve their objectives without war, but that's impossible. To begin with, their military complexes need the wars in order to continue to exist.

I read that American military contractors are swimming in money at the moment because of the two wars. The USA gives money to Ukraine and Israel on condition that they them must purchase everything from the American military contractors.

Apparently they had armaments that had been stored for a long time that were approaching their expiry date. I didn't even know missiles and bombs have expiry dates. They needed to be sold or written off at a loss of billions.

These reserves are almost exhausted now, having been used up in the wars. Same thing in Russia. They will need time to make new ones so a ceasefire is probably around the corner.

We lived in the US for 3 years when I was growing up. I also did an internship and lived there for 18 months as a young adult. I have a brother, a sister, some extended family and friends living there today.

You are right about the US but that doesn't mean the likes of Russia and China would not want to occupy the USA's dominant position in global affairs.

I'm not making a case for the US here. I'm just saying it's naive and stoopid to see other entities like Russia or China as having different ambitions from the USA.

If the west didn't go after everyone's wealth and natural resources, someone else would. They act differently sometimes because the US is stronger than them at the moment and that's the reality they're in at the moment.

I agree with most everything here but I think there are some differences between the US trying to set up strategic proxy territories and Russia invading Ukraine.

Russia’s actions were triggered by America’s not-so-subtle flirting with the Ukraine to join NATO. It’s more akin to the Soviet Union cosying up to Cuba and we know how close that took us to a nuclear war.

I don’t disagree Russia would like more global prominence, at least a return to what they previously had before America became the world police. But I think it would be attempted more with partnerships and economic strategy (BRICS). I do not think, and this was the point I was debating, that they are going to attempt to march from the Russia / Ukraine border straight across Europe planting their flag in EU states. Or as people were saying about dropping a ‘tactical nuke ‘ ..
