A sportsman once named "Britain's brainiest footballer" has been fined more than £2,000 and banned for 20 months for drinking and driving.
Clarke Carlisle, of Ripponden, West Yorkshire, was stopped by police in an Audi Q7 in Prestwich, Greater Manchester, on the morning of 29 July.
The 31-year-old Burnley player, who is on loan at Preston, admitted the charge to Bury magistrates on Tuesday.
The ban will be cut by five months if he attends a rehabilitation scheme.
The defender was fined £2,365 and ordered to pay £135 costs with a £15 victim surcharge.
Carlisle, who is chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association, was crowned "Britain's Brainiest Footballer" on an ITV show in 2002.
He was on the long-running Channel 4 quiz show Countdown last year, winning twice.
He also appeared on Question Time last year, alongside Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman and former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell.
So much for being smart...

This thread had about 15 comments on last time I looked! Must have been a quiet Sunday afternoon/evening. Quite right about Yorkshire Exiled, although most of the Northern bit is Duchy of Lancaster estate so (historically) belongs to us anyway Went to college in Skipton for a while, tried to educate them, didn't really go down well. Anyway all I am trying to say is, Burnley is definitely in Lancashire. Not sure any of that makes sense but I have been in work for 8 hours already and have another 9 or so to do, have had far too much coffee

The war of the roses was actually fought over Burnley. The winner got to keep it. We should have lost.
