5 Best Defenders in PL Ever

Whenever you ask the 5 best players the PL has ever seen, they're always attacking players, the likes of Bergkamp, Zola and Cantona, etc.
However, who are the 5 best defenders, that the PL has ever seen?
I'll start:
Vidic
Rio
Adams
Stam
Sol Campbell

Might be a bit biased there, and I've probably missed someone quite obvious but what do you think?

Colin Hendry, Jaap Stam, Tony Adams, Sol Campbell, Ryan Nelsen

DJeezus all I asked was "was he at his peak when he came to the premeirship" which just sugtgests he wasn't. I was by no means calling him rubbish if anything I was hinting that Desially at his peak was a possible entry on the list...

Ohh and in fairness over time the Premeirship has got alot better that is why later players could feature more often...

For example Pallister and Bruce. Both great defenders for United but the ones who came after like Stam, Vidic and Rio are better...

Hendry is a good shout...

Actually, swap Nelsen for Desailly. It's a close call but Desailly was slightly better.

It was more your
...in your opinion...
comment that suggested I was completely wrong when I said "Desailly...he was still one of the best CBs to have played in the PL."

And yes, the Premier League has got better, but you judge players on when they played. Paul McGrath, I think, is one of only two defenders to have won the PFAs Players Player of the Year award in PL history, and as such certainly deserves a mention on that alone , even if you are not as old as me and cannot remember his excellence.

So it appears I thought you were rubbbishing my opinion and got defensive and because of that you thought I was rubbishing your opinion and got defensive... well I for one am glad that is over...

Fair play McGrath was a good player but he was right on the edge on the start of the PL and in fairness there wasn't the same attacking talent around there is these days...

Surely you can't rule out king or carvalho.
Two of the best tacklers I've ever seen (in their prime).

not a defender per say, but i think we have to mention makelele here. literally revolutionsed the defensive midfield position. class player. also scored a fantastic volley vs some team i can't remember.

The game changes, and the art of defending has definitely modified.
It could easily be argued that todays CBs wouldn't be able to handle the extra physicallity of the likes of Hughes, Fashanu etc. Its funny when you hear people moaning about the likes of Stoke, Kevin Davies and the such, but in reality they were nothing on the early 90s bully boy strikers.

In my opinion you judge a player on his era, rather than try and take someone from the past and put their skills against modern football. Otherwise you could easily discount the likes of Pele, Maradona, Best, Charlton, Moore etc from being amongst the best players ever, just because they were from previous eras.

But an opinion is just that, something personal to whoever has it. All your choices are certainly worthy of a nomination, and I didn't mean to make it seem as if I thought otherwise.

Np Jeezus and best of luck tomorrow!

King is a good shout also... would have been one of the best had it not been for dodgy knees...
