Skyrim

I haven't played Elder Scrolls, but the advert and reviews make me want to purchase Skyrim.

Is it necessary to have played Elder Scrolls before embarking on this game?

i dont think so... it is only loosly based on the previous game "oblivion"

also it is a free roaming game meaning you never have to touch the actual story line if you chose not to.

will be a definate for me!

No. Each of the previous 4 games take place in different provinces. The other TES games (1-Arena, 2-Daggerfall, 3-Morrowind, 4-Oblivion) would help you get used to the style of play. I urge you to rent it rather than buy, just in case you don't like FPRPG's
