also it is a free roaming game meaning you never have to touch the actual story line if you chose not to.

No. Each of the previous 4 games take place in different provinces. The other TES games (1-Arena, 2-Daggerfall, 3-Morrowind, 4-Oblivion) would help you get used to the style of play. I urge you to rent it rather than buy, just in case you don't like FPRPG's
Well I adore the Final Fantasy games so I guess it's in a similar mould...
Not really Serial, but I'm sure you'll love it.
