The problem with Everton

Let me first go on record as saying that Moyes has been fantastic for our club. He's led us out of the abyss and into dizzying heights, then back down to mediocrity. I think his greatest attribute over the years has been motivation. Whether that be turning average players into good team players or giving genuinely good players the belief in themselves.

In the days when we had Lee Carsley, Tommy Grav, Marcus Bent and Andy Johnson, Moyes was in his element. Send these lads out and tell them to give their all. They will do it, week in, week out. It's how they played best. Added to that was a little flair. Arteta and Pienaar who knew how to play football. When these lads were on the flanks we had two clear options without Davey really having to exercise his tactical brain. Effectively our tactics were to get the workhorses to get the ball then give it to either Mikel or Stevie.

Over time our team has evolved. We've lost some work ethic and attempted to replace it with 'class' in the case of Saha. Like him or not he was once a good player. However where class is really needed is midfield and we currently have naff all. So Moyes' tactic, his one and only tactic, is rendered completely useless. Neville, Heitinga, Fellaini, Cahill and even Rodwell for me...none of them can do anything to instigate an attack. They can break up play all day long, but we're not going to score. As far as I can tell we have one coherent tactic nowadays - Get the ball to Baines.

I started this post with a clear direction and lost that some time ago. This is just a rant now. Coleman, a professional footballer cannot pass or kick a football off the ground. I'd say that's unacceptable. What sort of a midfield is Neville and Heitinga?! Over the last 30 years of football every team has agreed on one thing. You need passers in centre midfield. If fans or Moyes think our problem is the formation then they are idiots. It's our whole ethos that needs upheaval. Every other attack is started and ended by a big diagonal from Jags. I don't know who he thinks we have on the left wing. If it were Messi in Duncan Ferguson's body then we might have a chance.

We are absolutely clueless. I don't want Moyes to go but he needs to get back to his strengths. A team of workers with the odd genius. I think Drenthe comes into that category, so that's a start. As for relying of 'the team' to pass and move and create chances, forget it. You don't have it in you Moyesy. Brendon's Rogers does, but you don't. Accept it.

You cook with the tools you are given. If the handles break or fall off, if your oven never heats up and you have no money for replacements, then as a chef with self pride you try to do the best you can.
To say that David Moyes does not have it in him is a slur on the man, his toil and endeavour over the years, his obvious dedication to the Club, his players and the fans and to his absolute Honesty.
Yor Rant is ill timed and way over the top. Accept it.

I appreciate the sentiment Phil, but unless you think Moyes reads the articles here regularly it was a waste of time writing that.

Everton have just one problem - they have punched above their weight for so long that the supporters now expect them to be competing with the top 5 or 6 clubs every year. Quite frankly, they don't have the resources and Moyes has done a most wonderful job.

Talk about stating the obvious. We all know about Moyes and his lack of tactical ability which is why he needs a good assistant, unfortunately the lad he has at present is far from good I.E. I think like Bily, that Mr Round was a panic buy and his abilities away from the blackboard not studied enough. As for the lack of money, I just do not buy that as other Clubs in far worse financial state than us have invested in order to safeguard their future status and in fact many are above us. Kenwright is clearly no longer the Chairman he thinks he is and needs to recognise that, there needs to be a shake up and the first one to go, I would suggest is Elstone.
