STANDING AT FOOTY GROUNDS

THE FOOTBALL Supporters’ Federation (FSF) are holding an open meeting at The Sandon in Anfield tomorrow night to debate standing in grounds.

The FSF, which recently relaunched its Safe Standing campaign, believes that clubs should have the option to install rail seating.

The panel at tomorrow’s meeting, which starts at 7pm, will take questions from the floor, explain what they are campaigning for and address the concerns of those who have reservations about the proposals.

Chair of the FSF Malcolm Clarke, The Times football editor Tony Evans, Birmingham City University’s Professor Steve Frosdick and Kop season ticket holder Paul Jones make up the panel.

Amanda Jacks of the FSF said: “We do not underestimate the sensitivities on Merseyside and have nothing but respect and compassion for those who lost loved ones at Hillsborough.

“We know that some minds can never be changed but we hope to offer reassurance to those who believe standing areas are inherently unsafe.

“The FSF would never back anything which puts fans at risk.

“We’d encourage people to come along and listen to what we have to say

I WAS AT HILLSBOROUGH BUT IVE MIXED FEELINGS,IF ITS LIKE THE GERMAN MODEL IT COULD WORK.

I honestly think there is a lot to be learned from foreign sports here.

The GAA in ireland which is an amatuer organisation has stadiums which are predominently standing or are part standing and are managed quite well.

I believe this in part works as there are a certain number of tickets for each section of the terrace and fans are directed to their location as per the section indicated on their ticket, there by spltting a 10,000 capacity terrace into three sections there will never be more than 3,300 per section.

Maybe there are elements that can be taken from their strategies and action plans.

I was around in the eighties and have on times been bricking it on the terraces. Caged in and pushed twenty terraces down when your team scores is not my idea of fun. Things are fine as they are. If we were to revert to standing and something awful were to happen again then all the deaths and injuries at Hillsborough would have been in vain. Leave well alone I say.

I was around in the seventies & eighties and more than happy the way things are at the moment so let it lie.
