2012 season progress after 27 Games

So how are we doing now January is over?

Well, since our superb November L1 100% winning spree came to an end against Preston in December, we managed to end Dec ember and January with a W2 D3 L2 over the last month or so, which isn't really enough for autos at just 1.25 points per game.

Time will tell if the January comings & goings can reverse that as we'll need over 2 pts per game from now on for autos, and we've slipped down to 6th and been leapfrogged by Stevenage in the projected end of season table based on recent form.

However, we're still doing better than last season after January / 27 games:

Charlton are 1st on 64 pts (played 28 games)
W19 D7 L2, F53 A20, GD+33, with 12 clean sheets.
Win rate is 68% overall
Win % at home is 62%, away is 73%

27 League 1 games into this season, we're 5th on 48pts, (-1)
W13 D9 L5, F52 A31, GD+21, with 10 clean sheets.
Win rate is 48% overall (-4%)
Win % at home is 46% (+1%), away is 50% (-20%)
We are 16pts from top (+8), 6pts from the auto promotion zone (+2), 6pts inside the playoff zone (-2), and 23pts (-) from the relegation zone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

27 games into last season, Brighton were still 1st on 49pts, (P25) F44 A19, GD+25, with 11 clean sheets.

27 League 1 games into last season, we were 5th on 40pts,
F35 A38, GD -3, with 9 clean sheets.
We were 9pts from top, 4pts from the auto promotion zone, 1pt inside the playoff zone, and 12pts from the relegation zone.

27 League 1 games in two years ago under Ince part 2, we were in 8th on 42pts,
F39 A35, GD+4, with 9 clean sheets.
We were 18pts from top, 15pts from the auto promotion zone, 1pt from the playoff zone, and 16pts from the relegation zone.

27 League 1 games in three years ago under RDM, we were in 2nd on 51pts,
F52 A29, GD+23, with 9 clean sheets.
We were 10pts from top, 1pt inside the auto promotion zone, 6pts inside the playoff zone, and 26pts from the relegation zone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

27 (League 2) games in four years ago under Ince part 1 in the L2 winning season, we were in 1st and top on 57pts,
F46 A20, GD+26, with 14 clean sheets.
We were 7pts clear on top, 8pts inside the auto promotion zone, 15pts inside the playoff zone, and 38pts from the relegation zone.

27 (League 2) games in five years ago under Allen in the L2 playoff season, we were in 2nd on 52pts,
F48 A33, GD+15, with 10 clean sheets.
We were 4pts from top, 2pts inside the auto promotion zone, 15pts inside the playoff zone, and 26pts from the relegation zone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

27 League 1 games in six years ago under Wilson in the relegation season, we were in 24th and bottom on 24pts,
F26 A39, GD -13, with 6 clean sheets.
We were 26pts from top, 24pts from the auto promotion zone, 19pts from the playoff zone, and 7pts from safety.

27 League 1 games in seven years ago under Murdoch / Gilligan / Wilson in the relegation escape season, we were in 21st on 25pts,
F32 A51, GD -19, with 5 clean sheets.
We were 32pts from top, 32pts from the auto promotion zone, 19pts from the playoff zone, and 2pts from safety.

Intersting stats SG. Key one for me is comparing the points amassed by the top clubs this season compared to last and you can see just how much more competitive it is at the top (top 6 clubs) - all with plus 40 points, and four with plus 50.

If I remember last year (it is a while ago and I am not looking up the stats) - we had a poor run and really picked up mid Feb onwards to finish strongly?

Someone said in an earlier post we really needed 9 points from the next 4 games (shef wed included) and so far we have 1. I think we will have done well if we can end up with 5 points - which is clearly not going to be good enough for the auto spots.

Afraid given the strenght of those around us, even if we make the play offs (which we should) unless we are really gelling as a team, we would end up being out muscled by any of the other 5 clubs around us

Not catching my pessimisium are you Moo?

I think the biggest problem is Robinson's lack of Plan B, sides now have worked out how to play against MK Dons. Just 12 points since the start of December out of 24 is not promotion form.

In fact if you look at the stats by month, this isn't a one off slump

August 13 out of 15
September 6 out of 15
October 8 out of 18
November 9 out of 9
December 7 out of 12
January 5 out of 12

With both Huddersfield and Charlton to come in the next 2 weeks.

Had my jabs for the year Bill, so should be ok on that front There are still loads of games to go, so maybe we should have the cowshed looking like this when we play Charlton:

There are certain things I am concerned about.

We havent got enough steel in midfield, this is not something new, we find it hard against physical teams.
Martin in my opinion doesnt command his box, he is too easily blocked off by big physical players and then moans about it after the ball is in the net.
We stiil havent got a consistent goalscorer, McDonald has stopped scoring, and we havent got anyone in the top ten scorers in League One [ yet again ].
We have had over 3 million in transfer fees yet have spent nothing.
Perhaps we can get Baldock back on loan as he looks surplace to West Ham.
We will make the play offs but we have to beat the teams in the top six, something we have not been doing, so I think an auto place is out of the question.

agree about Martin
disagree about midfield
agree about attack - not sure Sam is the answer though - lets see how Smith slots in - a couple of touches on tuesday showed his class and strenght - challenge will be if the rest can keep up
