Today's game has further reinforced the thinking that Evra really does need replacing. At the least, some competition for his place. He plays like he hasn't a care in the world. Because let's face it, he can play as bad as he wants and he'll still be playing the week after. His attacking play is still excellent, it always has been, but his ineptitide when it comes to positioning and cutting out crosses is costing us week after week.
Smalling is better in Ferdinand than every single department, now. He wins the majority of aerial duals, something Ferdinand does not. It's a shame he is injured. It's also clear that Rafael is by some distance the best right back at the club. I've stressed this for ages now. The timing of his tackles are superb. It's increasingly obvious that experience is hugely overrated in today's game, and I think the constant tinkering of the defence is doing absolutely nothing for the development of the younger players.
Would like to see a back five of De Gea, Rafael, Smalling, Vidic and a new left back start as many games as possible next season. Only then, will we look like the force at the back like we did 2-3 years ago.
Increasingly Obvious...

I would love Leighton Baines at Utd. He can cross, shoot, tackle and defend, and he has a really good set piece on him. You never know we might actually score from a corner from time to time!

Baines is quality. He's 27 and wouldn't cost too much. I also liked the look of Celtic's Izaguirre before his injury.

I like your views.evra is starting merely because of his attacking prowess albeit at LB.

lets be honest here scholesatov.
is vidic ever going to be as good again?
in his 30s and out with a lengthy serious knee injury......

Maybe not. But, is he still going to be one of the best centre backs in the league? I would say yes. If not, then I'm more than confident in Evans coming in and doing a good job.

smalling = rio + vidic in terms of attributes.
doesnt get bullied. excellent in the air. makes last ditch tackles when required like vidic. has poise and reads the game as well as rio. plus he is very comfortable on the ball. the defence must be built around smalling. jones will never be as good as smalling as a defender, neither will evans. is fabio is fit why not play him?
