First Impressions

First impressions on last night's game and Jones' first game in charge.

I'm not going to read TOO much into the result, because a lot of teams win their first game (or games) under a new manager. The players are all out to save their jobs and so put in that extra effort that they maybe don't usually put in during "normal" games, in order to impress. However, it was not only a win, but a convincing one, which is always a good start, especially considering how we usually perform against lower teams!

For me, there were two pleasing things about last night. Firstly, Michail Antonio's performance. He seems to be a good replacement for Ben Marshall. Maybe not as polished, but he is certainly capable of providing the spark that we've been missing. Some of you might say he shoots too much, but I think that is something we've been missing for far too long; someone who's not afraid to shoot on sight. And it worked. Yes, he skied a few, but he scored twice. If he can score two goals and miss 50 every other game, i'd be happy with that! he electrifies the team and makes things happen. Teams won't like playing against him!

Secondly, I liked that we played with two wingers. Again, it's been too long coming, and again, it worked. When you have players like Madine, the one thing you have to do is get the ball to him. Two wingers should do that and lo and behold, the goal-machine got on the scoresheet. Coincidence? I'd like to think not.
Antonio down one side, JJ down the other. A terrifying prospect for ANY team, I would have thought!

The only question I have is...what are the chances of us being able to sign Antonio on a permanent basis? And perhaps more importantly, if the chance is there, would we take it? Or would he be another one we let slip from our grasp?

All in all, last night was an excellent start and could not have gone any better, but, in the big picture, that's all it was...a start. Now we need to keep it going and I don't see any reason why we shouldn't.

So you're saying that Dave Jones is a voodoo King Oval.

"I dont know what will happen but a Wednesday v United playoff final might actually be the end of me if that happened!"

Bit dramatic.

It's only a game, afterall.......

I don't think the result was a flash in the pan. Personally, I could see it coming with Antonio settling in. The urge for wingers to provide for the strikers has been well focussed on here. JJ never filled that gap.....great speed with sometimes a well placed shot on the end (not often enough), but never a well placed pass to a fellow striker in a decent position !!! Marshall's exit was paramount to our demise and to the machine's goal drought. There are a lot of winnable games coming up and our task compared to that of our neighbours is worthy of a dollop of quiet confidence I can well see us overtaking the blunts, but a careful eye over the shoulder at Udders is still very much needed.

As much as I like Megson ..

..Take last nights game with Megson in charge

..2-0 up and we would have shut up shop..

..2-1 and we would have been holding on for 22 minutes

A terrifying prosepct for us too!

Jones will hopefully stick with his namesake who had his best game in a Wednesday shirt last night. JJ is a complete liability. Great for the last 10 minutes if we are struggling but thats it - fat to inconsistens and can't cross, surely mandatory for a winger.

IMO I think Jones will get shot at the end of the season. MJ is solid and gives the team balance, Prutton isn't the answer either, not a natural winger and thus couldn't provide the service.

Great effort last night - kept it simple, players in their rightful positions, knocked it about a bit and hey presto! Some Goals.

One more striker on loan could be the difference..as I have mentioned before, I't be good to see Earnshaw here..def do a job at this level.
