...is a much over-used phrase in football management discussions. I believe though in the context of the Owen Coyle era, that this is for the current period, a fitting way to describe it.
Several players are going to be out of the club and Coyle's got a job on his hands filling their places with players on less wages, more flexible contracts and for the fewer pounds that are available from the transfer kitty. And yes, that's even if we sell Cahill for the 17 million BWFC are reportedly asking.
I'm of the opinion that it is only now we shall see what Coyle has in the talent bank as regards management chops; as everything he has done so far has been in the bright dawn sunlight after the long dark night of the Ginger Whinger. Only a few of our current players are Coyle's acquisitions, and while no-one can doubt the effectiveness of Wheater or the startlingly bright talent of Holden, it is now Coyle will be building a team in his image.
For that reason I think we now can say this is the true test of Coyle and that we are properly in the transitional period.
I hope that the early promise of Coyle's period in charge bears the fruits that one would expect of it, his man management skills are obvious in the light of what came before. His tactical nous and transfer dealings will be open to close and critical examination however and I'm intrigued to see how he'll stand up to the scrutiny.
And for those on here that will be critical of me and think that as a Bolton fan I owe my unquestioning loyalty to the man, I say this. Balls! If ever we as fans stop being critical of our club's management and directorship we'll end up with some journeyman jumped up coach as a manager...just like we did last time.
Transitional period...

Without Elmanders goals this season we would have been relegated. God help us next season.

And with a better return on £8.2m worth of investment, we could be in Europe and had a cup final....
But then.... If's and Butts.....

The fact is that two things are going to be vital.
First that if Coyle has to sell and release players he MUST get as much of that money back to invest as humanly possible. Secondly he MUST NOT let sentiment interfere with footballing decisions.
Al-Habsi should stay and be our number one keeper next season. Kevin Davies should be used as a sub. We need at least one LB, prob two CB's. A left winger and ay least TWO strikers.
That's at least six new bodies and Owen must be sure he gets the right bodies. There's been a lot of interesting ideas on this and the old 606 board recently about who and how much but the transfer business starts NOW and hopefully Owen already has something in the hopper. I don't want to sit here like I did two years ago asking when we'd make a move all the way to the end of the summer only to find that we'd signed Paul Robinson and that was just about it.
I kno we don't have fortunes to play with but we must use what we do have as best we can and get in early before anyone else if possible. I'm not expecting Messi or someone of that ilk but just one or two signings that show we have ambition to keep driving forward and in the right way. I have faith Owen can do it. Now's the time for him to prove that faith is not misplaced and it's time for the board to make sure he has what he needs.

Some posters have already given their ideas on the make up of the squad for next season.
Whilst it is admirable to bring in young, keen, energetic young players we will still need a balance with older, experienced players.
Some of the squads indicated carry very little experience and i think it would be folly to dismantle the squad totally.
We are losing 6/8 players who are out of contract and we had the smallest squad in the PL to begin with.
We all have different opinions on who to sign on,but at the end of the day the only opinions that will count are those of OC.PG and ED.
So we will have to trust them to get it right.
