hard to judge this one. on the one hand, it will probably make the atmosphere worse as the away fans will be too far away for any 'banter' between the sets of supporters. on the other, united have been very kind to away fans up to now by putting them in seats which offer some of the best views in the ground and also has them right next to the microphones, which is why the away support always sounds loud at old trafford. it will also allow us to improve the segregation and resell tickets to home supporters for when teams like wigan and fulham bring only 300 fans. still not entirely sure about it though.
It's good to trial it out. I can see it being implemented though for the simple reason that segregation will be easier!
The atmosphere at old trafford has been an issue for years now. Of course we are victims of our own success and the majority of day-trippers have spoilt it. What are the chances of the south stand being extended?
very slim as it would require building over the railway line and demolishing the houses on railway road, which the club can't do as they don't own them.
Re-development of OT would be very very difficult ,all areas seem to have been exhausted, apparently the Nou Camp is built partly 'underground' i think it's the same with Eastlands as well, not sure if that could work at OT with the surrounding areas next to the south stand.
The view of the game will be better for the away fans being re-located, i've sat up there and the atmosphere is non-existent but you do get a good view.
I don't think it'll improve the atmosphere at all really. If anything it'll make it worse as the people who sit in the East Stand always had great banter with the away supporters in the South East corner and on European nights Tier 2, so that'll reduce a lot of the noise.
If we want to improve the atmosphere at Old Trafford, the singing section proposal has to go ahead because hopefully we'll now have two sections of Old Trafford prepared to sing for 90 minutes and hopefully that'll encourage other people around the East Stand lower and Stretford End Tier 2 to sing more as well. The relocation of the away fans has helped in this respect because it has helped the proposal of the singing section to be looked at by United.
It's important that the core group of singers are sat together both in Tier 2 of the Stretford End and East Stand lower because it'll improve the acoustics.
Segregation wise the relocation of away fans will make it easier to offer more or less tickets to clubs. A lot of clubs don't usually sell their full allocation of away tickets at Old Trafford so it means that more tickets can be sold to United supporters.
In all honesty, the atmosphere will never be as good as it once was except on very special occasions. The only it'll ever get back to the way it was is to re-introduce safe standing areas and lower ticket prices so the people who have been priced out of coming to Old Trafford can attend.
I personally think its a myth that United struggle to create an atmosphere I've got a friend who has a season ticket right by Fergie who occasionaly has a spare ticket and too hear the strefford end even as a Liverpool fan can send shivers down my spine I was at the first game of the season against Tottenham and the atmosphere then was anything but shoddy!
I personally think its a myth that United struggle to create an atmosphere
-------------------------------------------------------
Trust me, it's not a myth.
The atmosphere can at times be absolutely amazing at Old Trafford and amongst the best in the country when the crowd are up for it, however it can also be amongst the worse which seems to be more often than not.
When we're playing the top teams both domestically and in Europe, it most of the time is excellent. I have to say though that a few people I spoke to about this season's Liverpool game said the atmosphere wasn't great surprisingly. When there is something riding on the game like a title decider or a game where we might need a goal to earn a point, 3 points or in cup competitions, qualify for the next round it's usually very good.
When we play the teams outside the top 5-6 and weaker European teams which the crowd expect us to absolutely demolish, the atmosphere is awful because most of the people at the games just sit there expecting the team to entertain but it works both ways. The team very rarely has a bad game when the crowd are really at it, most of the time it drives them on.
The Ajax game was a real eye opener because whilst the Ajax supporters were about the best I've heard at Old Trafford, the home crowd was arguably the worst I've heard.

to argue your point a lot of united fans think we're too good for the europa and carling cup which results in the reduced attendances. a few of my friends were saying they're not even going to bother watching the europa games
whats citys excuse? for a massive city v chelsea game that could have potentially kept you from winning the title if you lost.
not an important enough match?
sorry not too good for the carling cup as we just play second and third teams in that which people dont really get entertained by so they dont go to watch
Fans think your too good for the europa and carling cup.
An they say your arrogant!
Spin it any way you want but you give us grief and your just as guilty!

Same with Bilbao
The away support was utterly incredible but the home fans were silent for the most part
Even Bursaspoor's couple of hundred fans last season made more noise than us.
I doubt shifting the away fans into tier 3 will do much in all honesty
i'm sure we put valencia fans in tier three last season?
I can't remember Ole, and I was in tier two of the NW quadrant too. You would have though I'd noticed and I can't blame it on one too many Singhas either
i might be wrong but i'm sure they were up there that night, although they only brought about 500 as the match was a bit of a dead rubber. i think anderson scored for us.
