Chelsea's hopes of signing Gary Cahill are under threat because the defender is upset his negotiations over personal terms have been made public.
Bolton agreed a £7million fee with Chelsea last week and gave the England international permission to talk to the Blues over his salary.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas then revealed last Friday that the club and Cahill were "miles apart" over the 26-year-old's demands.
Standard Sport understands Cahill is unhappy that he has been portrayed in the wrong light and is having second thoughts about moving to Stamford Bridge.
It is believed his representatives have only met with Chelsea once and that having asked for around £90,000-a-week, he was offered only £50,000-a-week - the same wage that he is on at Bolton.
The centre-half, whose contract runs out in the summer, was prepared to negotiate further and was shocked that details of the discussions were revealed.
Chelsea are the only club to have made a firm bid for Cahill, although it is believed Tottenham will step in if the move falls through. Spurs have been interested in Cahill for some time and were already looking at signing another centre-half during the transfer window.
Manager Harry Redknapp may have greater need after William Gallas limped off with a calf injury against West Brom last night, although he is just monitoring Cahill's situation at present.
The club will only make a move if the Chelsea deal collapses completely because they are determined not to get involved in a bidding war with their London rivals.
Chelsea remain confident they can land Cahill, who is set to play for Bolton against Everton tonight, to west London, especially as they have the lure of Champions League football with a last-16 tie against Napoli coming up.
Meanwhile, reports in Brazil today claim the Blues are going to make a £29m bid for teenage Sao Paulo midfielder Lucas Moura.
The 19-year-old is rated as one of the best young players in the world and plays in a similar position to previous Chelsea targets Luka Modric and Javier Pastore.
Chelsea and a number of top European clubs have been tracking the international for some time, although he has a buy-out clause of £66.5m and recently said he wants to stay at Sao Paulo until his country hosts the 2014 World Cup.
His contract runs out in 2015, but Chelsea want to make a high-profile signing to provide more quality to their attacking play.
Afternoon all
tbh i don't think either one of Neymar,Lucas,Ganso will leave Brazil for the next 1-2 seasons.
Cmf,there were rumour AC and City begun talks.Has it broken down?
Forum rumour - Crystal Palace will sign Nathanial Chalobah on loan for the rest of the season. The young Chelsea centre-back is from the South London area and is fond of his local club.
Forum rumour - Chelsea are closing in on Everton's Jack Rodwell. An enormous fee of £24 million has been muted, £ 4 million higher than recent reporting.
Everton are keen to exploit Chelsea's urgent need to reinforce their ageing squad.
The fee, like most fees, will be paid over a 6 month period. However, Moyes is unlikely to be able to spend on transfer fees but will be able to bring in 3 or 4 players on loan or free transfers.

Afternoon Steve
Tj It wasn't a rumour that AC and City were in talks,It was a fact but AC Milan want to sign Tevez on loan and City don't want that they want to get rid of Tevez permanently that's why Inter Milan are now favourities because they are willing to buy him on a perm deal.
If it's true about Cahill's wage demands (120K) i don't think he'll end up at Spurs...even Liverpool probably won't pay that.
CFC steve, I think he would acceot a big signing on fee from Spurs or Liverpool in the summer, plus wages of maybe 70,000 a week.
Cahill wants to earn more than Mata
What are we allegedly offering Cahill, Steve, 50-60?
Npe - Might be the way it ends up.
Npe - Papers said it was a 50K a week deal. Reportedly he wants 120K.
Its all down to the signnig in fee issue, otherwise he'd have nowhere to turn...
Cahill wants to earn twice Matas wages.
