As impressive as 19 grand slams is for Nadal, only 7 of those slams have been outside of the French Open.
The guy's won 12 French Opens which is ridiculous and makes him the greatest clay court player that's ever been and probably ever will be.
At the same time I don't think that Nadal overtaking Fed's 20 grand slams makes Nadal greater than Federer because such a huge chunk of those will be made up of French Open titles.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
he's won 4 us opens, and although has only won 1 ozzie open, has been beaten finalist 4 times there
2 wimbys and 3 runners-up
he's proven he can win slams on any surface
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank god they both play in the same era, other than the argument (they both push eachother to succeed) I think we realistically would have seen one of them win 30 slams if the other wasn't around.
Nadal will probably end up with 25 minimum. Only 32 and looks unstoppable on clay so that should be another 5 or 6 French Open's alone
Dependent on injuries though of course
"Roberto Mancini assures Emerson Palmieri’s injury while on international duty with Italy was “nothing serious.”
https://www.football-italia.net/143990/mancini-emerson-injury-not-serious
Roberto Mancini on Emerson's injury: "It was nothing serious, he stopped to ensure it didn't get any worse."
Nadal moves within one Slam title of Federer for the first time since ...
January 31st 2004:
Federer - 1
Nadal - 0
September 8th 2019:
Federer - 20
Nadal - 19
There was a time when there was a gap of nine titles between Nadal and Federer.
Nadal managed to close that up fast.
"A total of 14 matches have been in Grand Slams with Nadal leading 10–4. Nadal leads 6–0 at the French Open and 3–1 at the Australian Open, while Federer leads 3–1 at Wimbledon. The two have yet to meet in the US Open."
Bettered on Federer on his strongest surface (hard) and at his peak (on grass).
Certainly has a claim to be in contention for the greatest, (even if Federer' style is more aesthetically pleasing).
Federer & Djokovic had to make many adjustments to their game and pushed themselves to the limit just to finally break Nadal's dominance over them (such was his dominance over the years, when his knees were in good nick)
A great makes one alter their style.

You would have thought by now there would be a new generation of men’s tennis players coming through to dominate and phase out the big 3. Pretty disappointing that no one is good enough to oust a trio of 30+ year olds, as good as they are.
You've got a few coming through - Thiem, Rublev, Medvedev, FAA, Zverev.
Not capable of beating the top 3 who are on another level still.
That’s what I mean, even at their age they’re still way ahead. It demonstrates that they’re 3 of the greatest ever but I still think it’s a bit damning that they can still be that far ahead of everyone else at that age.
Are any of the newer guys potential GOAT candidates? Kind of feels like men’s tennis dies a bit when the big 3 are gone

He's not in their class consistently enough...done brilliant to win what he has really
Double Olympic Champion too...which is very tidy
Yeah they're just 3 of the greatest ever.
You're correct, mens tennis will not be the same once they go as the winner of the slams could be anyone really. None of the new guys look like GOAT potential, they all seem to have a preferred surface, i.e. Thiem only turns up in the French and in other slams he's out in the first couple of rounds
