We need a powerful & physical DM that can also play out.
Probably why we were linked to someone like Denis Zakaria
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Zakaria would've made a much bigger impact on the team than someone like Havertz. That being said, I'm still harbouring some hope that Ampadu can come back next season and be the DM that our team is crying out for at the moment. His performance against Liverpool was very promising. I watched a decent chunk of that match and he was solid defensively while also being confident bringing the ball forwards.
My ideal midfield (if 4-2-3-1 is to be our main formation moving forward) would be someone like Gilmour paired with a DM in the mould of Zakaria (or Ampadu). I don't think any of our current starters at CM fit the pivot. For it to be balanced, I think we need:
(1) A defensive destroyer type who's comfortable sitting deep and sweeping up while also being physically imposing enough that we don't get outmuscled in midfield. Also, it goes without saying that they need to be comfortable on the ball - they don't necessarily have to be especially creative but they must have the ability to progress the ball forward (through passing or dribbling) even when pressed
(2) A creative deep-lying playmaker type who has solid defensive positioning and workrate. They need to have excellent ball progression abilities through passing and/or dribbling. Adventurous in their passing - i.e. willing to consistently make line breaking passes to feed the attack. Also need to be comfortable when pressed.
Of course we could get players who have a mix of qualities in (1) and (2) but regardless, I feel that any pairing must contain all of the qualities mentioned to be balanced in "any" game scenario. A player in the mould of (1) could also play as a DM in a 4-3-3 flanked by two 8s (e.g. Fernandinho for City).
In Kovacic, Kante and Jorginho we don't have a pairing that fulfils all of the qualities in (1) and (2). Kante has some of (1) but is far from physically imposing. Jorginho has barely any of either (1) or (2). While Kovacic is someone I'd have hoped could be a (2) but seems to be lacking in his forward passing (WC at dribbling though).
From our entire CM roster, Gilmour would be perfect for (2) and Ampadu has the potential to fulfil (1). Clearly it's a big ask for them to slot in straight away so perhaps we need to look towards the transfer market.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are proved correct, and I think at the moment our midfield options don't look right for 4 2 3 1, then Frank has fecked it for his 4 2 3 1 vision.
It seems to me from comments by our new signings, that Frank spoke to each of them and sold them the dream of an attacking and fluid Chelsea based on 4 2 3 1. If that is the case, then it will be very hard for Lampard to go back to 4 3 3 and in his mind save face, but it could be the only way he keeps his job.

Also Jorgi's main benefit is meant to be his possession play and keeping the ball live for us
I can't give him a good mark for that game due to that moment tbh
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jorginho is a ball recycler who isn't especially creative. He just doesn't work in a midfield two. There's a reason Sarri flanked him with two midfielders who were tasked with more responsibility in moving the ball through the middle third to supply the attack.

I think that'd probably be the best option. I'm still not comfortable with Jorginho being our last line of defence (before the back line) but without him we'd struggle to beat a high press. Kovacic is an interesting option who could also potentially fill that role but I don't think he's positionally disciplined enough. His dribbling - although very effective - leaves massive gaps in our midfield.

Havertz. Jorghino. Kovacic
Ziyech. Werner Pulisic,
Front 3 interchangeable withTammy CHO and Mount?
Ampadu vs. Liverpool

I'd say Mount interchanges with Havertz (don't like him playing on the wing). And that midfield looks a bit worrying defensively... Kovacic could be swapped out for Kante but then we lose his WC dribbling ability. There's no easy decisions here in all honesty.
So...leaving out our apparently best player not on the ball then...

So..
Havertz. Jorghino. Kovacic
Ziyech. Werner Pulisic,
Front 3 interchangeable withTammy CHO and Mount?

Literally fits my description of DM down to a tee. Definitely missed a trick in letting him leave. Genuinely makes me angry seeing him play like this for someone else.

Yep
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That is why I think wr shd go 4 3 3. I think Jorghino is the only CM that allows us to beat a high press, but is not good enough for a midfield 2.
Even if it is for just this season, I think we shd play Havertz as an 8. But I think Frank sold Chelsea to Havertz as playing as a 10

Yes that's the conundrum. It's really tough, but it might be the best decision for a balanced team

No, you didn't. You talked about sweeping statements.
