We finished 6th last season already, so we should be aspiring to do better this time. Otherwise what was the point in any of the actions the club has taken since then.
---------------------------------------------------
Owners expectations should be higher but mine aren't, it's not fair on Marseca.
If Pochettino was still here, my expectation would've been competing for Champions League spot from the new year onwards.

These owners have so far brought in project managers that clearly need time but haven't been afforded that. We can only hope that changes with Maresca but I certainly wouldn't put any money on it.
Wonder when a cycle of instant success big name managers are brought in instead ? Seems inevitable that will be next if things don't work out with this new manager.
---------------------------------------------------
That's a very interesting question, and if I had to guess now I don't see them doing that.
They'll keep hiring long term vision managers & not giving them time
Of all the ways they've unintentionally mimicked Abramovich's ownership badly, being conflicted about what they want is probably the funniest

That’s my point. If our expectations would be higher with Poch still here then it means the decision to get rid probably wasn’t wise. We’re the ones who got rid of him! Not like he died.
Well it probably wasn't wise. But it's right to distinguish between owner and fan expectations. I expect us to have a turbulent season with heavy pressure on the team and manager and links away for our better players. The owners presumably expect Maresca to outperform Poch (or to be less combative towards them more likely)

If their current approach continues to fail, it's likely they'll revert to the Abramovich model of instant success. They haven't shown they can give a project manager the time or structure needed for success. Maresca will be the ultimate test; if he doesn't succeed, they'll probably just return to hiring short-term success managers.

So agreed personal terms it's not a done deal then... Although I'd say he's perfect Newcastle material
Honestly I'm not overly bothered about Madueke. If someone wants to offer good money for him I'd take it.

For me after Palmer and Gusto, had a very promising season. Always working defenders, looking to make things happen. Unlike Mudryk who apart from nice finishing at times, was totally ineffective in games, especially when taking on defenders and ball retention

LOL! When? Mads was awful and basically England Saka v2. He would beat a player and then either be greedy and take a shot and miss (usually pretty badly) 9/10, or pass to no one or the wrong player completely ballsing up the attack.
Dont get me wrong would be sad to see him go cos at the start there looked like a very good raw player in there - last season though the ego caught up and he started to think he is much better than he is, if he can get this under control, eat a bit of humble pie and work hard there is a potential diamond in the rough for sure

I agree with you on his ego and attitude but not about his performances over the season.
Suspect Madueke will stay. Would seem odd timing to sell, thought he had a good season (much improved from the season before) and wouldn't imagine we'd profit much from selling him.
In terms of expectations...I've no idea what to expect lol. Although I don't think it's unreasonable to want to demand a top4 position, given I was confident Poch would have achieved that next year, and this is now 3rd season post Abramovich. I've no idea what Maresca is really like, but I'm just hoping his possessinlon based style is not simialr to Sarri because I found that pretty dull

That's why I don't have any expectations. Relatively unknown manager, new to the PL, with a squad of players of which many remain unknown quantities.
It's a lot to ask Palmer to repeat his goal contribution this season too. Completely up in the air as to how this season goes
My expectations are the same as last season tbh
To see gradual improvement and gelling of the team - and that's an important factor here. We need a team. Not Palmer FC. I love Cole but we have seen in the past when we have been over-reliant on a single player.
I hate with recent managers the moment we make a sub (often way to late) the team seems to no longer know what its doing.
And we need to see much quicker improvements - the reason why I think sacking Pooch was the right thing is the improvements we saw were about 8 months too late. What we saw in April I personally feel should have been happening around Oct/Nov. When you are a top tier coach you should be IMO getting better results in far faster times, now I am not saying league winning or anything like that. Just a players who like like a team and have a rough idea of how to attack
