Anyways, lots of relationships on the pitch that have to grow and evolve before we start seeing us at our best. Which I’m excited about with this group. I know it’s in fashion to talk shlt about our transfers but aside from keeper and possibly a great striker I think we will do well with what we have. Not sure how Sanchez convinced Maresca that in spite of being awful last season and getting kept out but a superior keeper that he was now good enough to be starter.

Positives:

Madueke had an up and down game but he's now consistently getting himself in good areas, creating chances and generally being a nuisance to the opposition defence. Only young so the hope will be he keeps on improving

Despite conceding, Fofana and Col will starting to look more solid as a partnership. Definitely something to build on if we can keep them both fit.

Sanchez almost had a nightmare moment but was decently good in terms of ball playing. I feel like we're building up from the back a lot better than we have in recent memory

Negatives:

Midfield a big worry - partnership of Enzo and Caceido continues to look porous. Too often chasing shadows and seem to struggle in transition.

Theoretically Palmer playing as a CAM should take away much of his defensive responsibilities but it seems they've now been replaced with "build-up" responsibility. Too often today he was in our own half trying to progress the ball through the middle third. He's our best creator and finisher so we really want him to stay as close to the final third as possible.

Enzo still struggling to add value to the team. He's a tidy player and looks good when we're trying to switch play between the wings. But I'd like to see him play more balls in between the lines centrally. A big reason Palmer was dropping deep is that he wasn't receiving those passes so ended up having to go looking for the ball

Gusto's form is slightly worrying. Offering very little in attack these days (not too surprising with the inverted full back role) and is struggling to be effective with the ball when he does get into good positions. Defending has also been meh.

Jackson. Can see what he offers to the team in build up play, and is scoring more freely now but does not offer that elite striker finishing that often makes the difference in tight games like these. That chance near the end was one we'd see Costa almost always bury.

Team looked severely unbalanced after the subs. Far too many no10s to put on when in reality we need wingers. Sancho will help in this respect but it makes me wonder how we keep Felix, Nkunku (and Palmer) happy when they thrive in similar areas of the pitch

I agree with much of what you say, minididi. I know people on here are frustrated (as am I) and are occasionally lashing out. But I don’t think it’s all bad. I think our football so far is much better than the last couple of years. In fact, I thought we actually looked really good for much of the first game against Man City - and that was largely due to having a defensive midfield player available in Lavia. So far Lavia seems to be the only irreplaceable player, as we don’t have another true defensive midfield player in our squad. Caicedo and Enzo don’t seem quite as solid together.

We have more than 2 players for every attacking midfield position, but only one defensive midfielder. And of course that’s the player who is injured. Hopefully he’ll be back after the international break.

Not a threat long as Ange is there. And best of all most of them are happy with him.

He's the ideal Spurs manager for all fanbases

1st half we did well, much better control and really ought to have got ourselves a larger lead. Palace should have then gone down to 10 men and shortly after got their goal which came out of nowhere. The worrying thing was just how uncontrolled and frantic it became after then, we really need to improve on that. A better team doesn't panic and just let's their quality show over time. That said, we had a couple of great chances at the end to get that winner

That Felix sub for Neto nearly killed us. He was awful on the left. At least the manager quickly changed it and brought on Mudryk who did pretty well today.

I didn’t get why we had Caicedo at CB and Gusto taking his position in midfield. Just play them in their correct positions.

Maresca made the same mistakes he's been making early season - First, not taking Enzo off. Today he wasn't awful but he wasn't good enough. Second, when a winger isn't working well, replace him with another winger and early - Madueke wasn't great today and nor was Neto. Felix and Palmer must play central and quite high for our system to work.

For my money, Maresca thinks Enzo is a playmaker but his passing is not consistantly good enough, We don't have a real deep playmaker, someone with a little flair and technique. Colwill and Fofana look good in defence but with Sanchez behind them and Enzo in front,we are going to ship goals.

And whose fault is that? That was a young confident side that won the CL. It wasn't a team coming to the end of its life cycle.

Very early days gonna wait till we get to 10 PL games before analysing where we are at but as previously stated, I have zero expectations this season.

Not saying it's the reason we didn't win today but the ref was atrocious. Foul after foul but no yellow for Palace players. Neto one foul and he's straight on a yellow lol.

Seems to be a regular theme with us although I prefer to call this out after we win. At what point does this need to be something the club address with the PL ?

Gusto is the most concerning disappointment so far this season. He was pretty good last season but has been crap so far. James needs to return after the internationals.

posted on 1/9/24

Play him at RB and he'll deliver. James also looked lost in that midfield role/3rd CB role in pre season. Both will be wasted in this system.
