Simon Grayson might have struggled since arriving at the Galpharm but the same cannot be said for Gary Johnson since he arrived at Huish Park for his second spell in charge of Yeovil Town. Johnsons first spell in charge of the Glovers was a remarkable one as he won the FA Trophy in his first season before going one better and winning promotion to the Football League from the Conference the following season in 2003 by a record 17 point margin. Yeovil became contenders in League Two immediately, missing out on the playoffs on goal difference before gaining promotion to League One as champions the season after. He left the club in September 2005 but since returning has once again achieved success at Huish Park. Johnson took over from Terry Skiverton in January with the Glovers 4th from bottom and 1 point from safety but they now sit comfortably in 16th place, 11 points clear of the relegation zone. An impressive run of 33 points from 21 games saw the club safe with 2 games to spare, it’s fair to say that Gary Johnson knows how to get the best out of Yoevil Town.
Key to the Glovers success has been the post-Christmas form of striker Andy Williams who signed for the club in August 2010 having being released by Hereford United. An unremarkable first season at Huish Park saw the 25 year old score only 5 times and he had only scored 4 goals this season before Johnson returned. However, a change in management has worked wonders for the now prolific hitman as he has netted an impressive 13 goals since mid-January. This run of form saw the club this week announce that they have offered Williams a “club record” contract to keep him at Huish Park beyond this summer when his current contract expires. The club clearly see him as key to their ambitions and it is widely expected that he will remain at the club despite interest from other clubs in League One. Another player of note for this weekend’s opponents is club captain Paul Huntington, a former Newcastle United trainee who also enjoyed a brief spell at Elland Road. Huntington was seen as a promising young player by most Leeds fans but when new manager Simon Grayson took charge in December 2008 he only made one appearance and was then shipped out at the end of the season after being seen as surplus to requirements. No doubt the Yeovil skipper will be wanting to prove his old gaffer wrong be leading his team to victory on Saturday.
Huddersfield and Yeovil have only met 15 times in the past. The first time the 2 clubs were ever in the same league was the 2003/04 season, with the first ever meeting at Huish Park on Tuesday October 23rd 2003 when Yeovil won 2-1 despite Jon Stead’s goal for the Terriers. The return fixture that season saw Town win 3-1 thanks to goals from Pawel Abbott and 2 from Danny Schofield as Town finished 4th in League Two before beating Mansfield Town in the playoff final. This fixture last season saw a dramatic match at the Galpharm end 4-2 to Huddersfield despite Yeovil being 2-0 to the good at half time. Substitute Joey Gudjonsson changed the game when he came on at half time and two goals from Jamie McCombe and one each for Scott Arfield and Gary Roberts sealed a memorable victory.
Town last played Yeovil in front of 3,486 fans at Huish Park in October earlier this season and ran out 1-0 victors thanks to an Anton Robinson goal 10 minutes from time, his only goal in a Town shirt to date. That victory saw Town extend their famous unbeaten run to 41 matches and moved them up to 2nd spot in the League One table with 16 games played. Overall Town have had the better of previous meetings between the 2 teams winning 8 times whereas Yeovil have only managed 5 victories with the other 2 meetings ending in stalemates. Town are unbeaten in the 5 encounters and will definitely be looking to keep their good form going against the Glovers in order to build some momentum before their 2 legged affair with MK Dons which starts next weekend.
I'll go a 4-0 home win with Town gaining a bit of momentum heading into the playoffs.
Thorough stuff Cas .. And fancy taking a punt on who the scorers will be .. ? Bear in mind Rhodesy's unlikely to be used other than may be 2nd half sub .. Hunty to grab one .. ? & am not being mischievous
I did match thread on to'other site so thought I'd share some of the wealth. Rhodes will start I reckon, Grayson only said he was thinking about resting him again and I think he'll know this is a good chance to get Rhodes scoring again before the playoffs. Therefore I'll say a Rhodes hat-trick and one for Novak.
Hmmm .. Well thats quite a bold call then .. and tbf I think I'd 2 Certainly want him to be on the side of him getting some game time.. Not start though.. Sit.. Watch.. Then Go On & Pounce ..
draw..low scoring..either we accept we are "saving" ourselves for the play offs or something worse..
as i said the best hope we have is to scrape through over mk and then hope the blades and stevenage "fall out" with each other in their games.. 3 games against the same opponents in a short space of time usually leads to niggles becoming personal insults..
saturday does not matter, best thing is to give higgy some more game time with us and hope nobody gets injured or does anything stupid..(jack hunt)....(clarkie) etc...
Hydy .. I'm not quite sure you mentioned this bike ride was a Full Family Affair .. Seems your splashed all over the Examiner Today ..
Shouldn't ~ Couldn't You whizz up a dedicated thread for this entitled something like .. Hydys Ride .. or The Ride of Hydys Life .. and then give us a day by day blow account of all the interesting stuff you see and do each day .. I gather already there's been an accident ..
C'mon Hyde's .. Its Good Stuff Your Doing This .. ..
PS: And include that Just giving page on it too hydy .. Thats allowed
The OS is now saying Rhodes is likely to be rested which changes my prediction a fair bit. I'm not happy because with him rested and Lee still recovering that means we're getting Novak and Higgy up front again and I really want to see Higgy played on the wing or just behind a front 2.
Seems I 'called' it right a couple o posts above after all then Cas ~ So anyway .. NOW What will be your revised predictions .. ?
terrier..
it wont happen this season..unless we are chasing the game in the second leg, but it still seems more likely that alan lee would be brought on...
i dont think we will "go for it" in the first home leg, grayson is one of those that seems to think you are best off trying to "sneak" the away 2nd leg..
A home draw would be taken now by the manager as we would "still be in the tie" going into the second game..
I might take that view as the away manager, its depressing somewhat to feel your own manager feels the same..
Looking at the games in a similar vein, rhodes has scored more away from home, why not "rest" him for the home leg, you can take this "football speak" nonsense to the 8th degree...
Im my opinion we might need novaks "legs" more than rhodes goals to get us through the two games, why not give him a week off, we might start with cads/higgy against yeovil..
That would be interesting if nothing else..
I'd like us to go for it in the first leg wherever it is, there's nothing better than going into the 2nd leg with the opposition having to be open from the start. Rhovak up front with Higgy just behind them, Roberts and Ward attacking down the flanks and Johnson sitting just in front of the defence. Then if we have a lead to defend in the second leg we can drop one of attacking midfielders for a holding player and operate with a more solid 4-4-2 looking to hit them on the break.
terrier..
i like the optimistic "hit them on the break" comment..along with roberts "attacking" down the flanks..
we are going to sit deep and hope to get something from a set piece.. sorry but you can see it coming.. 2 narrow defeats, a load of platitudes about "not being his team" getting the "squad right" etc etc..
if its 1-0 or 2-1 we will be on the wrong end, if its two high scoring games we have a much better chance..
go down "blazing" if we have to go down... the whimpers at millwall and old trafford are not acceptable again..
t's that time of year again where we as fans have no option other than to throw the form book away, get ready to bite our nails, hide behind our hands and just pray that things go our way. We've all seen the good times such as penalty shootout victories against Brentford and Bournemouth, Rob Edwards late strike against Lincoln, and of course great playoff final victories against Bristol Rovers and Mansfield Town. However, in recent years we're become more accustomed with the bad times, first going out without so much as a whimper down at The Den in 2010 and then last seasons capitulation as we were humiliated by Peterbourough at Old Trafford. I urge you to remember that feeling you had as you stood up and left Old Trafford, whether it was 10 minutes before the final whistle or half an hour after. Remember it, remember how much it hurt and remember how long it took you to get over it - we will not feel that way this year.
We are Huddersfield Town and we will not make failure a habit, we were the first team to win the league 3 times in a row and some of the greatest players in the history of the game have been proud to wear our shirt. I've had the privilege of going up and down the country with my brother and best friend for longer than I can remember and I've seen first hand exactly why we are the greatest team in the history of football. Our fans are unrivalled when it comes to passion and we make a noise no matter where we go and no matter how badly we play. The players have let themselves down badly this season but they have 3 matches in which to redeem themselves, many of them will not be here next season but they have the chance to bow out as heroes rather than villains. I urge every single one of you to not give up on the team you love, only 3 games are remaining and we all know that no matter how poorly you are playing you always have a chance in the playoffs. We are Huddersfield Town, the greatest team in football the world has ever seen, and we will never give up.
Yeah, I'm in positive mode for the next month, I urge you all to join me.
terrier..
they wont let me down, im ready for anything..
the pub stays open till 3am if town win or lose..
The feeling I had after old trafford was "thats been coming for so long"... wonder why "it had to be today"...
This time it seems to me we will either win all 3 games or get a really good hiding in one of the two semis.. If that happens, lets hope its the home leg and we can all save some cash...
I love HTFC, I love Deano, even with the mistakes he has made, I love Novak and Tom Clark, I quite like bennett but the rest I can take or leave, including Jordan and im not sure thats really the feeling you should have for your players as a fan... Quite a few are just wearing "my shirt" and its worrying.. maybe thats the way with football now..
