Defoe = doesn't get picked for his club team
Sturridge = young talented player with potential.
Yes definately Defoe for me.....
I think Cahill has got in over Jagielka purely because he plays for one of the big clubs.
--------
I disagree, he was being picked when he was at Bolton anyway and his form for us has shown he's certainly one of the four best centre backs in the country.
Gerrard and Lamaprd dont warrant a starting berth as neither have done well for their clubs this season
Both have only featured in about half the games (Lamaprd a bit more), both their clubs have been poor in the league and both arent half the players they once were
Carrick, Barry, Parker all warrant starting spots as they have been indispensible in their clubs successful (ish) league seasons.
Cahill is class on his day. He was immense Vs Barca.
Defoe is a better finisher. Guaranteed goals.
Sturridge too selfish.
Scholes and Rio should be crossed off for two reasons. There has to be doubts over whether both of them could last and international tournament, playing games in rapid succession. Secondly, we can't be preaching about how we are looking to the future and calling up a 37 year old and trying to get him out of retirement. It was his decision to go and although he has been a excellent player he said it was the end for him internationally, we move on and let someone younger try to form an international career.
I agree with the rest of your post though manutd1982
Not including Carrick is baffling, as is the inclusion I'd Downing
I think Cahill has got in over Jagielka purely because he plays for one of the big clubs.

Jagielka isn't even first choice centre back for Everton
JohnTerrysHardTackle - Captain, Leader, Legend ⚽⚽⚽ - Let's Go Mets! ⚾⚾⚾ (U1634)
You watch him far more than I do, never been that impressed with him to be honest, got a lot of blocks in against Barca but always felt Jagielka a far more complete defender.
I came across somewhat angry with my earlier comment. I didn't mean to - I just think that people are underplaying Lampard's recent form.
A real shame that Wilshire is injured.... that one change in the center would have ushered in the new era
Secondly, we can't be preaching about how we are looking to the future and calling up a 37 year old and trying to get him out of retirement.
--------------------------------------------------------------
We're not preaching about looking to the future. That's the point. This squad isn't looking to the future. So if it isn't Scholes should have gone if available. Mainly because him and Carrick are the only two ball playing midfielders in Wilshire's absense. Instead we have gone with none.
I must admit, after today I can't stand Roy Hodgson.
Sturridge is better than Defoe TopLad
And watchng Cahill at Chelsea has made me realise how underrated he is. Great defender. Better than Lescott
I have no problem with Lampard in the squad, think he's still a very good player with a brain, something we're clearly lacking in the middle. His pass for Ramirez's goal against Barca was fantastic.
Gerrard is the one that annoys me, in the squad purely on his reputation from a few seasons back, the guy isn't the same player and has been injured for the majority of this season. Add to that he's been made captain is a complete joke.
Sturridge should have gone instead of Defoe. Defoe's been harshly treated by England over the years but Sturridge although frustrating now could be a good player for England in the future.

manutd1982 agree again
Lampard playing deep in 4-2-3-1 with a defensive midfielder alongside is still worth of inclusion in the squad. His passing is vastly underrated and has been massive for us recently, especially, as you said, in both legs against Barcelona with brilliant passes to Ramires.
I'll support England and in many ways it's a no lose situation. If we get humiliated there'll be a satisfaction that the FA ruined our national team again.
What worries me the most about the squad - and is clear indication of where Roy is going tactically - is across the whole defence and midfield there isn't one player who is comfortable passing the ball about, controlling it and having it back - retaining the ball. At international level that is essential or you get dominated possession wise - as we have seen in previous years. Looking at the way Harry sets his teams up I'm sure he would have taken Rio and Carrick and he openly stated he would have begged Scholes. The reason being he knew he needed players who an play out from the back and pass the ball about. This squad can't do that so it's obvious we are going to be backs to the wall against everyone and try and hit them on the break.
I must admit, after today I can't stand Roy Hodgson.
-----
That's going a bit far.
I'm disappointed though. Hard to believe how same-ish the squad feels.
Jalisco it's how I really feel angry. I backed him when he was given the job but the squad is riddled with mistakes and errors that can only be attributable to his decision making. I'm sorry but the man is a total moron. I expected Carrick wrongly to be left out and that would have been bad enough but some of the other things like Downing, Henderson, Milner, Defoe, Jones, No Richards, No Sturridge, Gerard Captain, Terry included, No Adam Johnson etc. It's beyond a joke. I really feel like giving him a good slap.
Who picked the squad Carrickature? You were singing the praises of Hodgson before his appointment, and yet most of us knew he is about as safe and conservative a manager as is possible and was bound to just revert to the same old people i.e. Lampard & Gerrard, Terry etc etc. He's never shown any flair, so why would he change now.
However, many of his decisions in todays squad are quite frankly astounding even to those of us who knew he'd be a disaster.
Sturridge not even included but Downing with 0 prem assists and goals straight in. Rio discarded because he has only played a few England games since 2010 yet Gerrard is picked and made Capt despite having played only 34mins for England in 19 months AND on top missed most of the season through injury and has been relatively poor when he has played other than the hat trick game.
Carrick not even on stand by yet Henderson is, and Milner, an injured Parker and Barry all go ahead of him.
Carroll scores a handful of goals all season, Hodgson admits not knowing much about him but then picks him as one of only 4 strikers (when Rooney is missing 2 games) because the manager that paid 35m for the flop told him that he was good lol
Terry was ripped apart in the last international tournament you mention, largely for pace, yet is picked 2 years later and older, and Roy references his great CL form as one key reason! Terry's been good in c3 CL matches this season, and in the last one almost cost the club a final, then gets destroyed in the Prem by Liverpool who have recently been struggling to even score let alone win. Plus more importantly is about as disruptive an influence on the squad as is possible, and the black players can't be expected to just ignore the fact he's fighting a racism charge. Not to mention the fact he tried to act the captain the last time that Gerrard was given the role.
If Hart gets injured the side might as well fly straight home anyway.
Sweet Pea. I have already said this today and I hold my hands up. I totally got it wrong about Roy. Anything would be better than what we were subjected today and the Liverpool fans and others who highlighted this were right. I hold my hands up and apologise.
The Wonderfully Sweet Little Pea
Perfect analysis of the England squad.
Hodgson's first instinct is always to avoid conceding and then hope to nick one the other end.
Even a recent player said on SSN that the side was always set up defensively so he found it hard to let his attacking game flourish, and that was a player praising him! This is the man now creating a blue print for all Englands team from youth right through to the senior level. It's scary given the way Spain is going and the philosophy they enforce across all age levels now.
This guy will set us back years, and not from a position of strength. This squad is just the start...
