He showed glimpses of form for Pompey during his loan spell and looked like he wanted to prove himself, which is what the loan was all about..

On that basis you would think that Clough would stay quiet until the beginning of the season and at least give him the benefit of doubt to prove himself with a strong pre season.

Personally I'd like him to be given a chance especially as we are lacking strikers.

If he genuinely has been disruptive - which would be a sound reason for getting him out - I would like to know just what steps are taken to investigate the character of players before we sign them.

I write as an ardent supporter of NC but I think the above should be taken note of.

I think with Clough it is just as important to him how a player behaves / plays on the pitch as they conduct themselves off it.
If Maguire was world class, NC would probably ignore a couple of attitude flaws, but Maguire isn't world class, he is mearly average.
Clough gets rid of player's who don't conform to his way of thinking - that's pretty clear I reckon.

I'm just going to wade into this without reading any of the above. From what I have seen and been told by many Pompey fans who he impressed in a poor side, he is better than what we have. But we don't get to see his temperament or the way he trains so my/our opinions on the matter count for very little.

Chris Maguire... the latest stick to beat a manager with - there are times I long for the days before everyone had their opinions on the interweb and you only found out about the side when the Evening Telegraph reported a story.

When you scout a player you go watch them play - I doubt considerably any side allows other teams scouts into training sessions as it really would be a little self defeating.

Therefore when looking at a player you see them play in scotland (which Bryson has admitted the SPL is a lower level of the game) and make a decision as to whether they can step up - what you hope for in all your signings is a degree of professionalism.

What largely goes unnoticed at Derby these days is the fact that as well as reducing wage bill cutting out the albatrosses and developing a squad - our side also does not receive very many yellow cards any more (and from memory I do not recall any for dissent) the ONE red card this season was for the goalkeeper at forest - who in many unbiased eyes could be deemed slightly unfortunate to be sent off.

This is the attitude (or lack of) that Clough and his team seem to be wanting and perhaps it is only in working with a player you realise that he isnt going to fit with your expectations.

The goals he scored at Portsmouth were very good but then I saw a wonderful goal from a chap called Kazmiercek on youtube... didnt mean over the course of a season HE was any good.

I look at the squad we have built - shopping in the football equivalent of lidl and think that all (permanent) signings considered Clough must be deemed to be in credit.

We are now looking for a striker - I would say the hope is to "fill a gap" for 2 - 3 years for Bennet and Thomas to fully develop realise their full potential. The problem is 20 goal a season strikers are like rocking horse poo... the last one we had was Dean Sturridge - and he was from our youth team!

Look at the big picture rather than single players - the team looks to be shaping up - a shame Davies is looking at leaving but its his choice and this time last season most folk were saying "get rid!". Theo has scored 12 goals this season for 150k? noone seems to give Clough credit for that little spot!

Thank you for all your comments but as I have said before, I find there might be a need to question Nigel Clough if he goes ahead and sells off Chris Maguire for less than the money he paid for him, especially when he still has two years on his contract left.

Old One Eye.....TSAR: "lalalalalalalalalalalala I cant hear you"

I would suggest Old One Eye....that you buy an hearing aid then you just might hear what someone else has to say for a change, so you can then learn how to listen.

has maguire been sold for less than we paid for him?

TSAR,

Don't listen to Old One-Eye, he tried that "Would you like to take the pee out of my artificial hip as well" with one of his Nurses and it all ended up with a visit from the Social workers.

Just be very wary when he asks you to have a dump in his colostomy bag.

Some people have no respect for the caring professions.

Does anyone else think there could be other reasons why these players are being transferred?

Maguire was Luke varney without pace. Hit a wonder goal and everyone got erect we were missing out. If anyone actually saw him at pride park he was ineffective. Put your c @cks away and leave judgement to those who know best. The Management.
