I agree with Serial & Ramdini further up the thread. There could be something to do with his attitude, but the Portsmouth loan was Maguire's opportunity to show what he can do and he performed well enough to merit a second chance.
I support Clough, but sometimes thinks he needs to show a little more 'empathy'. I'm sure there were plenty of times when he was dropped in his career and then had to fight to get his place back. If you don't play someone, then send them on loan as a chance to play football and show what they can do but they still then look like they aren't going to figure, it doesn't seem fair to me.
If Maguire is a disruptive influence, then be honest enough to suggest it and fans will accept the decision.'He hasn't settled well' sounds like politics to me. 'He needs to mature off the pitch because his attitude off it leaves a lot to be desired.'. See, it can be done.
The fact that Sheff Weds are the club who have bid for him doesn't suggest anything though Dave Jones (1) knows a player when he sees him and has a good record of sourcing talent from the SPL himself (McCormack) (2) is able to get the best out of 'troubled'/troublesome players (Bothroyd, Chopra), though you could argue that ruined Cardiff in the end under his management.
I think Maguire will do well at another Championship club, but I would only sell him if we get a good price and have a decent replacement lined up.
Everyone has got one mate out of the rest of the mates who is a bit of a cockerill, always says says something daft, gets themselves and others into trouble and is disruptive and always thinks he's right.
Maybe either he's like that or none of the rest of the squad likes him because he's a lazy git and isn't a team player.
I don't want someone like that at our club

I doubt young Colbi has
Or maybe your the cockerill and your the one talking out of your backside cause none of us have a clue, join the club.
Not you Marco, < sorry> mr _ Stimac
Not sure I agree with you Mr Stimac if you're inferring Maguire isn't a team player/lazy because the success of his loan spell seems to dispute this.
I bet if we asked Portsmouth's fans about him, they'd have back permanent.
I'd have thought the manager might have read the riot act to Maguire if he was displaying an attitude, his banter not going down well and tell him to save it for the opposition. That said, Maguire may not be excused from blame either. None of us really know what's going on.
But I think Clough said a loan to Portsmouth was intended to give the player game time and see what he can do - it now appears more a case of putting him in the shop window.
For sure we've missed you on this board Bob, , the voice of reason .
Bob,
He may not be on his way,
"We have received two bids from a Championship club in the past week for Chris Maguire and both have been rejected," said a Rams spokesman.
Clough feels Maguire has struggled to adapt to life south of the border – but, equally, has not ruled out keeping the player.
"It's a bit of bad luck, really," said the Rams boss. "He's come down from Scotland and not settled particularly well.
"I think he's found it tough in terms of adapting to life in the Championship.
"He's not been consistent enough but he's certainly got something, as we saw with a couple of goals he scored on loan at Portsmouth.
"If nothing happens and Chris is with us at the start of the new season, that's fine and we'll use him from there."
Igor - no need for that. I was simply giving my view of what may or may not be the case.
Sorry Bob I didn't read your earlier post
CapnBob
I wasn't inferring anything other than the fact that there must be an explanation why Clough didn't play him and chose to play Mason Bennett and Steve and Theo rather than him.
We know he's a poor trainer - he's said that himself so it maybe to do with that. Clough watches training every morning and all the reservie games so i trust his judgement.
And Varney started excellently for Blackpool in the prem and went quickly downhill.
I personally have nothing against Mcguire but there's something Clough doesn't like in the guy
Well, from the little I've seen, Maguire looks a good enough player at Championship level - which is where we're at. I'm sure Dave Jones has sounded out Michael Appleby about the player, hence the bids.
Not sure about the Varney analogy, completely different league. We all thought it was a bizarre deal, a dream move for a very average player. It started off brightly and then tailed off.
MrStimac. Basically it just boils down to 'transparency'. None of us really know the inside details: is it booze, an attitude, disruptive influence on younger players? I'm sure these can be managed.
As for being a bad trainer, that's interesting, but some managers might say 'as long as you do the job on match day, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.'
Time will tell CapnBob - Clough's not got one sale wrong yet for me - ie no one else has moved on and done much else for other times.
If he stays let's hope the season starts with a fresh chance for everyone but i'd rather see another striker come in and playing alongside Theo - an experienced man like Ricardo Fuller or Jonathan Parkin to give us a different option in certain games

Yes, that's the fascinating thing and I don't dispute that. Hulse, one example, it was the fact that we never replaced him that hurt us (Glick's responsibility), not Hulse himself.
I'd have liked Maguire to have been given a clean slate, but feel that a parting of the ways is inevitable. I think Jon Parkin about 18months ago would have been ideal, but his career has gone backwards. Parkin was involved in a Twitter outburst and Mackay sent him out on loan so it seems odd to replace one disruptive player with another.
I agree about different options. If Steve Davies goes, Ball will be the only striker capable of challenging for aerial balls; we need someone to hold the ball up and bring others into play and lead the line/physical presence as well as a natural finisher.
It'll be an interesting summer that's for sure!

Yes, some do... and the outstanding example of Paul McGrath comes to mind from Derby's own history.
However, look at where we are today... a team of no outstanding talent, who get results by teamwork and work-rate.
I can help but think if there's someone who doesn't take training seriously (and the training ground is where teamwork is built, and the fitness to support the work-rate is earned), but that person nevertheless gets regularly picked for the starting 11, then sooner or later the efforts of some of the other squad will start to drop-off too.
If that happens at Derby we're in deep trouble, because those are the only attributes that get us points.
It's a fair comment, Wideboy. I still think though that Maguire did enough at Portsmouth to merit another chance.
I read somewhere that he's seen more as a second striker and I guess what we really need is a proper front man (Bennett could be a second striker). Probably a case of a player who hasn't bought into what the manager wants/demands as well as being sold to bring in funds.
