There not alot he could have done for Jelavic's goal, Silva's Goal, Torres's 2nd goal or Mancuvic(sp?) 2nd.

He coul dhave done better for the first croatian goal, and fabregas and Torres's 1st.

So he was at fault for 3 goals, and only partially at best.

He went into the tournament with injuries and i'm afraid its showing! That said the back 4 havent exactly helped him!

I think the problem is Shay wasn't fully fit. He rushed back from injury. Something tells me him and Keane will be finished with Ireland after the Euros.... Great servants and all time great players for us but time has caught up with them.

Back four were shocking to be honest. Given is a great keeper , wish we had him !

I really don't get why people are making him a scapegoat for yesterday. I don't think there was anything any keeper would necessarily have done better for any of the goals.

Slow-motion very often makes keepers look bad, but the truth is that all of Spain's goals were excellently hit strikes - the 1st, 3rd and 4th were bullets that give you virtually no time to react, the last two being his through the tiniest of spaces to the near and far post respectively.

As for Silva's, he was completely blinded. It was a wonderfully subtle and well-taken goal.

On the other hand, the stop he made from Xavi's shot in the second half is probably one of the saves of the tournament so far.

Spain had 20 shots on target last night. Only 4 went in. I haven't counted how many exactly were saves and how many were blocked by defenders, but a 75% success rate in keeping out shots on target is pretty damn good going if you ask me.

Going be some big changes re our starting X1 and maybe even Management team when this tournament is over i would imagine!

he gave an interesting interview on BBC last night.

Said maybe its time for the older guy to step aside and let the young ones come through.

When pushed on weather he was going to retire, he said he will be deciding in the next few weeks.

Given might have saved the first goal against Torres, but then Torres wouldn't have been through on goal in the first place if Dunne had just managed to clear the ball properly instead of dithering.

Pssh poor defending on all the goals. Richard Dunne wasn't 100% fit coming into this tournament and it shows.

A team as limited as we are, cannot afford to constantly give the ball away on the edge of the area to the likes of Iniesta, Torres, Xavi, Silva, Fabregas... absolute suicide!

Trap saying he was my beloved Chelsea's tactics vs Spain , difference is , Chelsea have 11 very very good players on the pitch , instead of Dunne , Ward and St Ledger etc. Plus Torres was playing against you lot , not with ya!

Time to take up Bingo Trap .

I agree, although Torres barely played in the CL final, and without him Chelsea were probably only marginally more effective from open play than Ireland... it was only a setpiece header from Drogba in the last 5mins that saved Chelsea in that game.

Still I hear you on the defence, Chelsea have defenders who don't tend to repeatedly gift the ball to world class opposition on the edge of the box and their centre backs don't slip and fall on their ar$e every 2minutes of the game like St Ledger did last night

We need a huge shakeup there, bring the young players through, guys like Ward, St Ledger and Dunne can't go into every game knowing they're an automatic selection, or this will keep happening.

And who chased down a lost cause down the wing to win that set piece? Answers on a postcard.....

HECTOR:
:He(Given) has been at fault for EVERY one of the goals in this tourney" >>>>>>>>>> How can you possibly have reached this conclusion! Please explain. I think Given has performed quite well and made some exceptional saves!

posted on 15/6/12

Reivers got a point Hector, Given made at least 2 world class saves last night!!!
We will probably never have a goalkeeper as good as him again
Spain actually had something like 15 shots inside our penalty area last night
On another night we could easily have lost 9 or 10-0!!!

I am not making him the scapegoat, Ireland as a team have been pretty poor throughout, nor have I said he didn't make a few great saves, merely that he has been at fault for all goals. Agrre that his defence has let him down but he should have, if he was the Given of 5 years ago, got a mitt to every one of them.

The Croatian game he was at fault for every goal, the Spain game, again, he should have got a hand to every ball, I concede that he was blinded for the Silva goal but imo, he still should have deflected a ball that was travelling at 10mph.

Sorry HECTOR, but we'll have to agree to disagree. IMO he could only have been partially faulted for the first goal(the slow, loopy header), but even then I still think he was very unlucky to find himself behind a wrong footed defence and unsighted by possibly 1/2 players. Also the header, though very slow, was quite well placed.

Lads getting there was the achievement anything else is a bonus. Given has been one of the top 2 players for ROI in the last 15 years. The amount of times he has stopped a goal by far outweighs losing two matches.

Well said Gawa! Look we all feel let down by the performances of the players but i dont its fair to be taking it out on Shay Given!

posted on 16/6/12

i would just love to be there - to slate a player who has been so big in the process of getting there is silly.

Not slating the man at all, just think he 'at fault'.
