Couple stats on AVB people say he's clueless defensively
11 This is the number of shots Chelsea conceded on average each game in the league under Andre Villas-Boas—the lowest of any team in the Premier League.
Yet they have still managed to concede more goals than five other teams, namely Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Everton and Sunderland.
At Stamford Bridge, the Blues have conceded the second lowest amount of shots per game, nine, behind only Arsenal who conceded 8.8 on average.
Away from home, Chelsea concede 12.4 shots, again the second lowest, this time behind league leaders Man City.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The problem with this stat (certainly for Arsenal) is that it totally depends where you're conceeding shots to the opposition. If you limit them to shooting from long range they might have quite a few efforts, but mainly in frustation, whereas I think Arsenal's defence allows teams to get closer to the goal before pulling the trigger - hence our defensive woes. See the Norwich game for example, when they broke they were normally able to work it to a one-on-one situation with a centreback, and carve a chance out from that - all their shots ended up being decent efforts and they scored three goals.
Just because you reduce the number of shots the opposition takes, doesn't necessarily mean you are defending better, and the worry with AVB is that, like Wenger, he is trying to play a high line to put pressure on the ball, but that leaves you vulnerable if you have slow central defenders (i.e. Terry, Mertesacker, King...)
Having said that, there is no doubt AVB will get Spurs playing exciting, attacking football, and given your strengths going forwards, perhaps that would suit you better than playing Bale down the middle...
Can see us really tearing teams aprt if we spend some money.. we are so close to having a top team ..
