Trying to Go Up on the Cheap?

We were only paying part of his wages when he was here last season. If we were to sign him we would have to pay a lot more than we were last season.

We had complete and utter knuckleheads running the club last year. We have now got a proper businessman in charge with a Chief Exec that knows his stuff, long may this continue. I also think that you need to wait until all the deals are done prior to the season kicking off before stating we are trying to get promoted on the cheap. The team is a work in progress at the moment. In GM & MM we trust!

owls fans theres weeks to go yet!

You missed out mentioning Heffernan from your exit list!!

Mellor's rumoured to be on 9k a week, that's the stumbling block. That will not fit it to MM's business plan, wage structure and financial management of the club, and I welcome this stance.

Building within your means is the only way to ensure long term success. I'd take slow consistent progress of a sudden rise and a bigger fall. I think Manadric has taken over knowing that with our fan base we should be challenging for the premier league and he will build a sensible plan to get us there whilst not risking the long term financial security of the club. I applaud this direction.

Exactly, it was just a few months ago Mandaric said his time at wednesday was "the most frustrating time of all my years in football"
He's a savvy business man and and cash we made from selling Spurr etc will partly go to re-couping the costs and losses he has incurred from both our lack of promotion and the money he cleared our debts with. I can't blame him for not wanting to splash cash.

Totally agree with most of the comments . I think we've made some really good signings and got rid of most of the dead wood! Spending hand over fist got us into the mess we're in today - something our Sheffield neighbours know all too well about. Perhaps they should have learnt our lesson (but very glad they didn't )

I think Morrison, Coke, Reynolds and Semi are going to open a few eyes this coming season, so I quietly confident of a very good season ahead. Obviously we still need another forward, but there's still plenty of time left before the the season starts! UTO!!

A lot of players show their true form in their second season at a new club.

Maybe players like Morrison & Coke will show their true form.

Could this be the year that Modest breaks into the first team? I think he spent last season out on loan but forget where, maybe its his time up front.

He was at Darlington. Played about 15 games but I dont think he got a goal. I saw him play 4 or 5 times for Darlo and he looked decent. He struggled with the physicality of the game at times but he will get stronger with age and experience.

Not ready for our first team yet, IMO.

9k in league 1, hes having a laugh. He hardly set the league alight last year with his 13 goals! I'd not pay him 6K.

revenge on the taxman.. ?..

..his cut gets lesser and lesser !

There is also the wage cap to think about. If we throw a big chunk at one player, that means we have less to go around for a few players in January if we need them through injury etc. Don’t know exactly how big of an allowed amount we have, but say he gets his £9k a week, that’s £468k a year from the 60% of our turn over we are allowed to use, if we get him on £5k a week that frees up £208k from our allotted amount.

So it goes further than just being able to affording his wages!!!

Plus as briggowl says 9k is a lot at this level

So what if we do want to go up 'on the cheap'? If it means going up, I don't care if we go up 'on the game'.

F knows what people see, so much in the fat fewker. 13 goals is P iss poor if you ask me. ched evans got 9 goals and in a higher league. tell the fat fewker to do one.

For a start, he may have scored 'only' 13 goals last season in League One but he only started 24 games: not a bad record, even if you factor in his 9 substitute appearances.

Secondly, noone knows how much Mellor is on and Megson was recently saying that suggestions he's on £9k or £10k a week are unfair to the player.

If he's too expensive for us to sign then so be it but why some Owls fans are getting on his case for scoring 13 goals in 24 starts is beyond me - I guess some people jsut turn up to slag the players. If both Madine and Morrison manage 13 each in the whole of next season I'll be happy.

I don't buy in to the substitute excuse.
if he had put more effort in when the chips were down, then he would surely have scored, what hes paid to score.

Move on from the fat fewker and pay for someone like Cody Mcdonald.

posted on 12/7/11

Cody Mcdonald has scored 92 goals in 166 appearances.
Not a bad scoring record is that.

Who's he play for?

He's a Norwich player but spent last season at Gillingham!

posted on 12/7/11

He didn't do much for Norwich in the third division. However, that was his first 'proper' club and he did very well in the fourth division the season after. My question is would he want to come up north. He looks like an Essex boy through and through judging by his previous clubs. The furthest he's been from home is Norwich and then he's on loan - at Gillingham. Hmmmmm.....

Plus he's names after Buffalo Bill!

I wasn't making excuses, just stating facts. If 13 goals in 33 games isn't good enough for you so be it; I guess there's no pleasing some people.
