England Player Ratings - A Serious Attempt

Joe Hart - 6, never looked confident against the Italians, pushed a couple of balls straight back into the danger area, still very young for a keeper & at times it shows
Glenn Johnson - 6, a couple of decent performances as part of a good back 4,got out of trouble a few times with his pace.
John Terry - 8, whatever's said about him, he's a great defender, but has the turning speed of the Queen Mary which lead us to defend deep at times
Joleon Lescott - 8, had a good tournament, he's a top notch left sided CB
Ashley Cole - 7, as solid as ever.
James Milner - 5, headless chicken most of the time, he's not been on form for his club, why pick him?
Scott Parker - 7, always gives 100% but was totally exposed at times in the centre of a 2 man midfield
Steven Gerrard - 8, up until last night he'd had a very good tournament.
Ashley Young - 3, dreadful throughout, should have been dropped & amazing that he was on the pitch to miss a pen at 120 mins last night, a total shocker
Danny Welbeck - 5, don't get the hype, he's average, if he played for Wigan he'd be nowhere near the England squad, let alone the first XI. Defoe must have been gutted, sat there watching Grace Jones for 4 games.
Andy Carroll - 7 Did well when used, looked about our sharpest player & capable of scoring with the right service
Wayne Rooney - 4, why is he an automatic choice for England? He's done nothing for us in any finals for 8 years & yet he's somehow seen as undroppable. He was way off the pace & woefully unfit.

Ashley Young
0 goals
0 assists
Zero defensive cover
Zero impact
Off target penalty

How do you rate that on a 1-10?

Yet he played every single match!

Hey, wait a minute....!!!
Downing has similar stats so you cant really have a go at young for that!

Toblerone - i'm surprised you listed Johnson as Englands worst defender. I thought he made more vital stops, tackles than any of them as well as doing Milners job

I initally thought Terry and Lescott had good games (they did in the second half) but half the reason we parked it so deep and desperately for the last 75 mins is they kept getting owned by Balotelli on long ball counters.

Cobnob - if you picked 10 British cars and scored their performance out of 10 you would get a similar spread. If however you took the same cars and compared them on performance to cars like Ferrari, Bugatti etc then the British car ratings would come right down!

Johnson was th only one to force a save from Buffon yesterday while also denying Italy's only real chance from Nocerino. No other player doing it at both ends in the England team like that.

So they are being rated against each other, not how they performed over the tournament?

I just think its a bit generous for players that were generally out performed in the games they played.

The set up of the English defence all centres around the lack of pace of John Terry. The only time we played a higher backline was against Italy in the first half. The first half that Balotelli on more than one occasion got in behind them. You could see in the first minute of the second half that they'd been given instructions to sit deeper to nullify the threat of Balotelli. It worked because Balotelli never really threatened in the 2nd half, but it also killed off England's attacking options.

A telling fact was that the first offside given against us was in the 80th minute of the 4th game of the tournament

I don't agree, some of the last ditch tackles were of his own causing, & I think Milner covered for him OK, once he went off, Johnson never got over the halfway line as Walcott offers nothing defensively. He did OK, but for me I'd have Micah Richards over him every day of the week.

Pretty much agree with Toblerone Boot's rating, except, Johnson should get 7 and Parker should get a 6. And as much as I agree with him that I don't get the hype with Welbeck, he did play ok in most games so he'd get a 6.5.

I think Johnson's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. If he gets back and defends he comes in for stick and people say 'yeah but the tackles and blocks he made were his own doing'. If he gets forward then we hear 'yeah but he's crap at defending'.

Johnson was one of our better performers this tournament and, I thought, had dispelled the he can't defend myth. Apparently not.

Johnson played his best football as a wing back for Portsmouth imo.

I agree red_man, Johnson was one of the better performers this tournament. Sometimes reputation is hard to shake off.

Just read a player rating giving Lescott a 4 and a reminder of his inablity to control Ibrahimovic - opinions eh......

Johnson was ace the whole tournament

He shouldn't have had to as he's been very good all season for us but he did.

A few bad months of killed confidence when Roy was systematically destroying Liverpool seems to be the permanent opinion of some regarding Glen no matter what he does.

Playing an offensive fullback in a deep sitting back four is the work of a pure genius. The only thing to better that would be to play 2 wide men in front of your attack minded fullbacks then tell them not to venture too far over the opponents half way line

He shouldn't have had to prove his doubters wrong as he's been very good all season for us but he did.

sorry missed the bit in the middle

I've said for a few seasons now that technically, Johnson is one of the better players in the Liverpool squad

Enrique's not even the best attacking left back in Liverpool.
