Totally agree left post, our promoting especially of Robin Hood is dire, I mean the only thing in the city we had was the Tales of robin Hood and that doesn't even exist anymore, are the council so blind to realize that with a bit of investment in promoting Robin Hood they could make Millions from tourism. I mean imagine if this was America, Robin Hood would be plastered everywhere in the city, as well as attractions to see as well. I mean why not use the castle as well to promote this, i.e. do Robin Hood shows e.t.c to attract people from all over the world to visit.
On the point with Forest as well, I think first things first is that we need a new club shop in the city and the City Ground is given a face lift i.e. with a new main stand. It is no coincidence IMO as well that city's themselves prosper from how well their football teams are doing, I mean look at Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle to name a few, with them redeveloping their cities based on the money i bet is brought in from football fans visiting the area, i think the council needs to do more to promote this and put Nottingham well and truly back on the map as atm with the Vic Centre and especially the Broadmarsh, it is starting to look a bit shabby!

I think that the club will only allow shirts to be sold at the club shop, and web site. Up until a couple of years ago they could be purchased from sports shops.
Hippo: what a photo
Completely agree about the robin hood point. It really should be made so much more of. Ray... I know it always makes me laugh about Doncaster robin hood airport . Sorry, we've already bagged him. Major oak. Nottingham castle. Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin hood is ours!! And the final conclusive point.... A fair maiden... from Donny ..... !!
Birth certificates should always have to be shown when purchasing football related items. Definatley !!
Wonder why old red? A smaller margin on a higher turnover.... Increase profile etc etc. one thing I really hope does change! Or as super_BD said above - a new shop in the town centre!! Great idea !!
There is no record of a Robin Hood but historians have tried to identify possible people who may be associated with the legend, two of whom were from Yorkshire.
There was no Sheriff of Nottingham until the 15th century. Prior to that, from the Norman conquest onwards there was a High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire based in Peveril Castle, Castleton.
Sherwood Forest covered a much larger area then, covering parts of Derbyshire, Notts and Yorks. Nottingham has no more claim to the Robin Hood legend than Derbyshire or Yorkshire. If he had have existed though, being a criminal there is a good chance he would have supported Forest.
You sound slightly bitter InS.....
Don't worry, Derby has a rollerworld to bring in the tourism
thanks for that one I'm not .... but like I said we've already claimed him as our own!! Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story
I think it is funny when anyone tries to say Robin Hood is not from Nottingham. i mean every piece of historical evidence written down refers to him as from Nottingham.
The stories about the Sheriff are true as well. How? because it has been written down that Nottingham during the reign of king John was one of the harshest places to live and the Sheriff was the one who governed the territory.
Also the castle. Nottingham Castle used to be the largest Castle in all of Europe until Oliver Cromwell blew it up after the Civil War, as he knew if Rebels got hold of it it would be so hard to take back and it was so expensive to maintain. Anyway I jest, why is all the legends linked with Robin Hood linked with Nottingham Castle? if he lived in Yorkshire it would have taken him at least a days ride maybe even more to get to Nottingham, so how can he be so closely related to it.
People then try to argue the point that because it is widely regarded that Robin Hood was Robin of Loxley, that he was from Yorkshire not Nottingham. Really? So the Duke of Devonshire who lives at Chatsworth is from Devon is he, and is William the Duke Of Cambridge from Cambridge? Come up with some real points with evidence please, and then I will get back to you!
P.S the only point you are correct is is maid Marian, she was made up I think around the 17th Century I believe by writers who tried to make the robin Hood Stories more entertaining.
Sorry about the grammar, I wrote the piece hastily before you all jump on me for that
Not bitter at all Sheriff, just stating facts. Being from the Notts Deby border originally I am more concerned that the amazing local cheese native to Derbys and Notts is called Stilton.
Im glad Nottingham underplay the whole Robin Hood thing,it would be tacky.
There is a difference though Albert between underplaying it and basically having no recognition really of it in the city. I think if the castle did a bit more to promote it and few Robin Hood attractions were put up, things like the Tales of Robin hood used to be, but updated, then that would be a happy medium.

Colston Bassett cheese mmmmmm......
If you haven't tried it. It's from near langar/Bingham area. World famous and cheesy! There you go Albert! You see it's not always bad
I agree the castle is a let down and should do something through the peak season period, but keep it there and out at Sherwood Forest.
Keep the tourists out of the city centre? Why?? Tourism has got to be a good thing for us in Nottingham?
With have good year round visitor numbers that come for the shopping, entertainment and nightlife. We have to compete with other cities to keep these people comming back. Turning Nottingham into a naff Robin Hood theme park would do more harm than good.
The Robin Hood tourists can still have a city centre base enjoy what the city has to offer and go out on day trips to the Robin Hood attractions.
What attractions?
There isn't really anything in Sherwood either, except a few notice boards round the major oak.

The event attracts good numbers from across the globe even though most of us that live in Nottingham have never heard about it.
I love the Robin Hood arguement. He could have been born anywhere, he could be buried anywhere but the world over he is associated with Nottingham. Cloughie was born in the North East but will always be associated with Forest, Derby and Leeds. When people talk about Dalglish or Fergie they think Liverpool and Man U, the list is endless.
Maybe they should rename the airport Doncaster Kevin Keegan Airport, at least he was definately born there, although people worldwide associate him with Liverpool, Hamburg and Newcastle.
