about damned time too
What we really need is a female Andy Murray from somewhere
a top ten female player (minimum)
Watson and Robson will both be top 20 at least within 18 months I feel.
Jonty, I don't think they will, they will get into the Top 50, then the papers and magazines will all want interviews and photo shoots that will distract them and then they will slide out of the Top 50 again, and the media will ignore them until Wimbledon comes around and then the media will run articles about the state of British Tennis and how the top british players don't fulfil thier potential - blaming everyone but themselves
Having said that, I think both did really well last week.
Bill, I disagree, I think they've both already been through that after winning junior slams.
It's no co incidence that we had best Davis cup and individual women's performances for 20 years.
The fact there's 2 of them at same time means the focus is halved as well unlike Murray who has had to handle the focus single handedly.
I believe we've got a nice few years to look forward to here.
They are both half decent looking too...
Jonty,
JW has just stated the reason they will get derailed, they will get Fashion shoots, Film Premier invites etc, although Andy is a very good tennis player he will never be a fashion icon unless he wins Wimbledon of course).
Think of how many articles there were about what Kim Sears was wearing, comparison to Kate etc. and she was just the girlfriend of someone who was playing in the final.
Now imagine how much more there will be if either Heather .or Laura make say the quarter finals of the French Open or do really well at Eastbourne
Bill, they already get that. Watson has a very level head on her shoulders and Robson is knuckling down aft injury interruptions, I have faith in these two.
Lets see how they cope with the Olympics, that should be a good indicator of pressure and exposure
You have to ignore the Olympics, it bears little relation to their livelihood which is about ranking points and trying to make it at Slams.
Plus they'll not be playing singles there.
I meant more about coping with the pressure and the limelight rather than winning
Bill, gotcha, I still think they'll be fine, they're not expected to win, pressure will be on the athletes in the games who are potential medallists.
Jonty, I hope they both enjoy the experience and wo knows in 4 years time one of them might be going into the Singles as favourite for the Gold
Robson falls at first hurdle in next tournament on a tie break to 3rd seed - no disgrace.
Watson meanwhile wins her next first round match at Carlsbad and could meet Wickmayer again whom she met in Stanford a weeks ago and lost in 3 sets.
Would be very interesting to see if she can engineer a different result this time.
Jonty, totally agree, as long as they progress and only lose to higher ranking players I don't think there is cause for concern. They are both just learning their craft and any wins against higher players should be regarded as a bonus rather than an expectation (at least for this season)
Bill, Watson is a quick learner, wold love to see how she handles Wickmayer now just a week later.
Is the tournament on Eurosport? I know they cover a lot of WTA matches
