How many players?

His comments about Long are simply disgraceful! Fans will boycott the upcoming qualifiers, if they think the attendances were bad last time around just wait for this campaign and it'll send the rats in the FAI scurrying for cover

I live in Glasgow and go to great lengths to get back for the games at the Aviva these days. I'll always support the Boys In Green, but I'm refusing to pay so much money just to watch Trap's boring football and ignorant tactics.

TRAP OUT!

posted on 16/8/12

Fair enough lads, but the man is on an enormous salary and it would cost the FAI a small fortune to sack him now, so I really can't see it happening... not when he's got us to the euros and a world cup playoff.. even despite his odd selections...

If he'd done a Brian Kerr and finished 3rd and 4th in two qualifying campaigns then sure of course he'd get the sack!...

.... but ultimately success in international football is judged on RESULTS and not popular team selections.

Even if you take account of our missing players we have still been punching above our weight for the last 4 years under Trap...

If you compare us to our neighbours of relative equal strength, Scotland and Wales, they both have squads just as good as us, yet they can't even get near the playoffs, let alone qualify for tournaments!

So maybe we should all try putting things in perspective a little.

I'd rather get to tournaments regularly with a slightly obnoxious manger like Trap, then be managed by some Mr Nice Guy who is happy for us to finish 3rd/4th in every qualifying campaign and doesn't want to ruffle any feathers, don't know about the rest of you!

very very fickle fans

I am not fickle. I never like to see players played out of position under any manager, whether that be for club or country. I've always held that opinion and I'd imagine other supporters of our national team hold that opinion too. It's not something I believe we have changed opinions on frequently, so "fickle" isn't the word to describe us.

Trap is a great manager, but i do know what you mean about his stubborness. It is so frustrating, although we have done well with him, qualifying for the euro's imagine what could have been if he chose the best players at his disposal, rather than McShane and Green and went for Clark/Pearce and Hoolahan for example

not really fickle when it's stuff thats been said about trap from the beginning of his reign.

As far as i'm concerned, as long as Trap has learnt that we now MUST play 4-5-1 against the more technical sides, then I'm happy enough for him to stay and guide us to Brazil

For me the major issue with Trap has always been his brainless 4-4-2 tactics against the bigger, more skillful teams, rather than his odd team selections, frustrating as they are.

Sure he could definitely pick slightly more technical and more youthful fringe players than the likes of McShane and Green, but as long as our most talented and most influential young players are in the squad, like McCarthy, Coleman, McClean, Wilson, Pilkington and Hoolahan then I see no reason why he can't secure us a playoff place behind Germany.

Also a bit of continuity with squad selections is no bad thing as you can guarantee we'd lose every single game if we kept chopping and changing the first XI each time depending on who happened to be in or out of form that particular month.

Fair enough in thoery but he has barely acknowledged Wilson , McCarthy, Coleman, Hoolahan or even McClean as for Pilkington he's never been in any Trap squads. For the public to be pulling their hair out exasperrated by a managers refusal to pick his best premiership players says something is seriously wrong with the ROI set up! Your clutxching at straws just assuming he'll start utilsinjg these players, he's shown in the past he rates McShanes, Greens and Keoghs far higher than Wilsons, Hoolahans or even Long, incidently all our best premeirship performers. The guys barking mad and should be pensioned off to a home some place

To be fair Len I wasn't so optimistic until I saw that he did actually try to call up Wilson, Hoolahan and Pilkington for the Serbia friendly, but Norwich told him they were both injured.

If they carry on their form from last season I see no reason why they can't be in the next squad, especially when you consider the Wolves contingent have fallen into the championship, and players like Keane and maybe even Duff, could be retiring, there's space in the squad now, even despite Keogh, Green and McShane.

I agree though he is completely mad and his "idiota" press conference was inexcusable

The comments he made about Long I find infuriating, how can these players have any respect for him after his shambolic euro's performance and refusal to use anyone else outside his in stone starting 11??? He has now had serious fallouts with a riduclously high amount of players, he's like a bull in a china shop with his daft pigeon english and his demented use of players out of positions and even odder selection policies. He's a total and utter liability and we will just sink further and further under his lunatic leadership

Alexia,Fickle? really?

Look at the damage the old man is doing to irish football. Should we just sit back and watch him destroy irish football whilst being grateful we have a big name manager in charge?

Yes you should remember he is the only manager out of the last 3 or 4 to get you to major finals. He has made a very poor squad (albeit he picks it) into a team that is very hard to beat (Serbia most recently)
Show the old man a bit of respect

PS ,was thro the much maligned Strabane last week ,it was actually rather pleasant with the beautiful Sperrins as a background ,very nice as was Sion Mills,so wont have a word said against Strabane again

It was the (much weakened thanks to trap)squad that got us to the finals not trap. He made things harder for us.

What were you doing in Strabane?
