Ronaldo is number 1 in the world but I do think that Rooney is a better player all round cos Rooney is better on the international stage. Mesdi does nothing for Argentina so shouldn't really be considered.

Rooney's goalscoring at international level has been sporadic. He was good around Euro 2004 and during 2010 WC qualifying, and he's also had 2 goal droughts lasting over a year each. He's scored 26 goals in 70 appearances. Messi has scored 17 in 59. You can't even use the international argument in Rooney's favour any more because there is no longer much between them.
