Thinking that he gives the ball away a lot is selective bias
His pass completion stats are higher than a lot in our team

Maybe its the part of the pitch he gives it away that sticks out more. Or maybe his pass completion is helped by a sideways or backwards pass. I dont know. Do you have a link to this by the way as it would be good to see.
He isn't the only under performer though. Eriksen always seems to escape a lot of flack on here. He's scored just 2 goals in the league so far - both freekicks in the one game against Swansea.
I just see Lamela as the most obvious weak link in the first XI. We have had a few good performances where Lamela has played, but the best and most balanced i have seen us was against West Ham. Everything just flowed well in that game - and where possible we should play the XI that started that day.

If you click 'PS%' on the graphic that shows the pass completion rate
Cheers for the link but if I am looking at it correctly, this shows us that Rose and Walker have a better pass rate than Lamela, as does Alderweireld and Vertonghen. Alli, Dier and Eriksen also have a better pass rate – but this is to be expected.
I might be reading it wrong though as the link is blocked by my work and its tricky looking at tiny details on my phone.

You must have clicked on the wrong section
Walker, Rose, Alli, Eriksen, etc all have lower pass completion rates
Weare,
You make a good point.
He may be better than he was - but is he better than other players we have? In my opinion he is not.
Even with Townsend aside, i would have Chadli, Son, Eriksen, Dembele, Alli and Mason higher in the pecking order.
Analog,
I've checked again and i'm definitely on the Passing tab, PS% column.
Analog,
Ignore me...I think i've got it now.
Does it show Townsend's pass rate at 82.1% and Lamela 79.9%?
64 mins vs 984 mins though Chicken.
Flashy,
64 mins vs 984 mins though Chicken.

I didn't post the link - or suggest it was reliable. I'm just comparing the stats like i was asked to.
Wonderful.
Wonder how the rating system thing works. The one that has Townsend at 6.60 and Lamela at 7.05.
Anyhow, isn’t the whole point of using percentages that it takes into consideration the amount of minutes and works out the average rate for comparison purposes?
Flashy,
You’re throwing it in my face as if I produced this link. I didn’t. It was suggested by Analog. I’m not really a stats man anyway. I prefer to judge on what I see rather than look at numbers in a table.
As you can see, we can pick stats to suit an opinion either way.
Statistically, Ade has the most successful win rate of any Spurs captain in living history – never to be beaten.
I don’t agree – but I’m not a stats man..
I'm not throwing anything in your face. I haven't read why the link was posted. I just clicked the link to see why it wasn't working for you I assume after your Townsend percentage post it's another Lamela vs Townsend debate.
I don't often look at stats but interesting every now and then. Genuinely would like to know how the rating works to arrive at the final score.
Flashy,
I assume after your Townsend percentage post it's another Lamela vs Townsend debate.
=====================
That wasn't my intention. I've accepted Poch doesn't rate him so thats that.
But as Poch does seem to like Chadli, Son, mason and some others, i would like to see them getting picked over Lamela - but i dont think he ever will.
Its been quite a friendly discussion so far so lets not ruin it.

he has done better of late but if we watched his performances this season you would not say .. wow theres our 30 million man
----------------------------------------------------------------------
well no... but if he continues his steady curve of improvement then he will be worth it.
hes still young lets not forget, and has exactly the right attitude to succeed in this league.

I'm sorry but a type of attitude will not determine whether you succeed or not. There are players with a good attitude who dont, and players with bad attitudes that do.
The question is, would we currently make a loss or a gain on this player? And the answer is a big loss.
surely the point is that you are more likely to succeed with the right attitude than without it?
anyway, lamela has already proven that he is a premier league standard player....
if we sold lamela now I reckon we could demand upwards of 20 mill for him
Going on his Tottenham career Lamela is a £10 > £12 million pound player.
The only saving grace is his Roma career that maybe you could get another £5m on top from an Italian team
if we sold lamela now I reckon we could demand upwards of 20 mill for him
==============
Not a chance. Hengy is far closer with £10-£12m.

double that in the current market. don't forget that he is pretty outstanding in the EL, which a lot of teams on the continent will look at.
furthermore he has a big rep in Italy, and he is still young.
also if we are talking about getting 10-12 for townsend (very possible), then Lamela is easily worth at least 1.5 times that
